Why is it recommended not to shower before bed?

It feels so good to go to bed totally clean after taking a long hot shower, isn’t it? But from a medical point of view, showering before bed is not the best way to get a good night’s sleep. In fact, this seemingly healthy habit can do more harm than good.

we, from awesome.clubwe decided to delve into the evidence indicating that showering before bed may not be as relaxing as we thought.

1. You may not be able to fall asleep so easily

Taking a hot shower before putting your head on the pillow may seem relaxing, but it can actually disrupt your sleep. You rest better when your body temperature is a little lower, and as your body starts to prepare for a good night’s sleep, your temperature drops a little. Taking a hot shower will raise your internal temperature and confuse your body. If you feel like you can’t go to bed without showering, opt for a lukewarm shower an hour or two before going to bed.

2. It can make your heart race

If you’ve ever felt your heart beat faster after a hot shower, know that there’s a scientific explanation for it. Hot water raises blood pressure and experts warn that it can even overheat your body, putting stress on your heart. When your heart is racing, you are likely to spend the night tossing and turning in bed, which can eventually lead to even more health problems.

3. It can make you gain a few extra pounds

Savoring a delicious dinner and taking a hot shower right away can seem like a perfect way to end the day and finally head to bed. But in reality, getting in the shower after eating can confuse the digestive system and lead to weight gain. Digestion requires more blood flow to the stomach and bathing causes blood to flow to other parts of the body. If you feel like you really need to shower at night, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating.

4. It’s bad for your hair

Taking a shower before bed and going to bed with your hair still wet is not good for your hair or your health. Sleeping with damp locks will allow your pillowcase to absorb moisture and create a warm, humid environment, perfect for harmful bacteria to thrive. This, in turn, can lead to various scalp problems such as itchiness, irritation, and dandruff.
