Tips for using mirrors in decoration |

Mirrors are often considered the “aspirin” of Feng Shui. This is because it is believed that these objects work as medicine, promoting healing in the environment, by emanating qi (vital energy), through the vibratory properties of the metal.

In ancient China, mirrors were made of metal and polished until they became reflective. For this reason, they used to be used in Feng Shui as remedies associated with the Metal phase. Modern mirrors cannot be used in the same way, as most are composed of a layer of glass and only a thin metallic film behind. For this reason, the mirror is nowadays recommended for its qualities of reflecting and moving the qi of environments, fulfilling an important role in decoration.

But as even aspirin has its use restrictions, check below what to do and what to avoid when it comes to mirrorsaccording to Traditional Chinese Feng Shui tips.

Mirror in the entrance hall

If the mirror is in front of the main door, it will reflect back all the qi (vital energy) that would enter through there, creating an overly accelerated flow and preventing the energy from entering and circulating smoothly throughout the environment.

And when they say that the mirror reflects the negative energies that enter the house, be aware. The mirror has no discernment and will reflect any kind of energy, even positive ones, leaving your home devitalised or even generating arguments. If you want a mirror in your entryway, position it to the side so that it helps channel qi into the room.

mirror in the bedroom

The mirror reflects and accelerates the flow of qi, making the environment more yang, that is, dynamic and agitated. And in a bedroom we just want more tranquility and rest, which are characteristics of a yin environment. If the mirror reflects the bed directly, the result will be insomnia or light, unrefreshing sleep. The ideal thing is that the mirror is inside the closet, or even in another room. If it is inevitable to have a mirror in the bedroom, make sure that it is not facing the bed.

mirror in the room

The image reflected by the mirror is very important. If you have a beautiful view from your window, you can take the opportunity to bring some of that look into the room.

In the dining room, avoid full-length mirrors, which are able to reflect the backs of people sitting at the table. This would create discomfort and possible arguments. You can use mirrors that reflect the top half of the wall.

mirror in the hall

If you have a dark and cramped hallway, the mirror will be a great tool to make the qi more dynamic there. But remember that the mirror must be on the side wall of the hallway. If you place it at the end of a long hallway, it will double the length of that area, creating an aggressive flow of energy called sha qi.

mirror in the kitchen

In Traditional Chinese Feng Shui, we do not agree with the theory that a mirror on the wall behind the stove would multiply prosperity, as stated by other Feng Shui currents. But the mirror can be useful in case the cook has his back to the environment. This position makes you vulnerable physically – by exposing yourself to wind currents – and emotionally, by not being aware of who is approaching. In this case, a mirror would help to expand the visual field of the person cooking, also allowing the person to visually control the rest of the environment. A calm cook will certainly pass good fluids to the food!
