This is how you interpret a recurring dream that your car is rolling backwards

Besides fitness and exercise, I’ve always been interested in the paranormal and the “unexplainable”, especially lucid dreams and NDEs.

Another dream, your car rolled backwards!

Do you often dream that you parked your car and turned it off, but then it started rolling backwards?

Or maybe you are dreaming that you got out of the car and it is not moving, but after watching it for a few moments it starts to roll backwards?

Whether you’re in the car or not, you always know what’s going to happen if it reverses itself – it’s going to collide with other vehicles.

Dreaming of your car rolling backwards while you are still in it

In these dreams, you already know how the car rolled backwards even after turning off the ignition.

Of course, you have NO idea that you are dreaming about this scenario for the umpteenth time. Despite this, in these dreams you fear that the moment you turn it off and take your foot off the brake pedal, the vehicle will go backwards.

And indeed, it starts. You slam on the brakes hard, but it’s no use.

Another variation is that before you park the car, it reverses even if you are not on a hill.

In both cases, the inevitable occurs: the rear of the vehicle collides with another parked vehicle. But your car keeps rolling despite being against the other vehicle, forcing the other vehicle to move forward, further crushing it but also forcing it it to move too.

This usually leads to a chain reaction in which – while you’re still behind the wheel – the vehicle your car struck rolls into another and crumples that one too. And so forth.

And you just sit helpless as your car keeps banging into the other vehicle, increasing the chain reaction – which can happen in any parking lot or even on the street.

You cannot get out of your vehicle because you are either afraid that it will spin out of control or you are afraid of injuring yourself trying to jump out of the vehicle even though it is moving slowly.

Dreaming about your car rolling backwards after leaving it

Pretty much the same thing happens if the rolling only occurs after you exit your vehicle.

Except that you can experience it from a larger angle. You’ll also more easily hear the crunch and crunch of metal as the chain reaction unfolds.

You then fear that the rogue car will be traced back to you and you will have to pay for all repairs and/or your parents will get very angry (even if you are long an adult).

In these dreams, no one will get hurt or get trapped in their vehicle when yours slowly crashes into it.

Dream includes hills

Sometimes there is also a hill, such as when reversing slowly on a sloped driveway. If you slam on the brakes with all your might to control the vehicle, this will have no effect and it will keep rolling backwards onto the road.

Or you park on a hilly street. All you know is that the moment you turn off the engine, the car rolls backwards downhill—sometimes steeply downhill.

Interpretation of these recurring dreams

Two strange things come to mind

No one gets hit – no pedestrians or cyclists, and other hit vehicles are always empty. In real life, don’t be afraid of your vehicle escaping your control. Indeed you are a great driver and your car is in good condition.

Feel completely out of control of your life

The sedan, SUV, van, pickup truck or bus that you are driving in these dreams symbolizes or represents your life. In waking life you are feeling very out of control.

Too many disturbing things are happening in waking life that you haven’t been able to mitigate. In waking life your thoughts are often focused on solving grueling situations where you just can’t get the upper hand.

This dirt is in your head when you go to sleep and needs to be processed. So your mind creates those dreams over and over again.

interpretation of the details

The backward movement eliminates the possibility of easily seeing what might be coming from behind. Moving forward would give you some sense of control as you would easily see what was coming (in your future) – something you couldn’t do in waking life. Remember, the theme is the feeling of being out of control – you are afraid of harrowing circumstances looming behind you, such as: No one else gets hit or is present to witness the situation as the issue is all about YOU. It’s YOUR life spinning out of control, not someone else’s.

I’ve had this recurring dream for many years, but I still consider myself an excellent driver and always have a well-functioning car.

But things have happened in my life that make me feel powerless. Some situations have been resolved while others are still ongoing.

Alternative interpretations

Back to the past

Rolling back or moving backwards symbolizes an intense longing – to go back in time and do things differently to avoid the negative outcomes in your life that ended up happening.

How many times have you imagined yourself suddenly going back in time – maybe five years, maybe 10 years, maybe 20? Or maybe the makeover is marked by an era like high school, college, the early years of your marriage, a certain job, etc., and you can relive all those years except with the mind, knowledge, and wisdom you currently have? How nice would that be!

The dream is code for a rollback in time. But why does rolling back your car in these dreams make it a stressful experience? Because in real life, knowing you can never turn back time for a rep is stressful as hell.

Slipping backwards into bad habits

You may have failed to quit smoking (many times) or tried repeatedly to lose weight without success. Maybe your marriage is failing or you’ve been sleeping too much. These failures torment you during your waking hours and continue to fester in your mind during the REM (dream) phase of sleep.

What better symbol of this than that of a 4,000-pound metal cage with wheels you can’t stop them from sliding backwards?

Rolling down a steep hill or sloped driveway

This symbolizes a subset of the out-of-control phenomenon: Fearing that choices you make in life will result in disaster, as in the symbolic disaster of your car rolling backwards down the driveway and being hit by an oncoming vehicle. And what could be scarier than sitting in a car rolling down a steep hill beyond your control and inevitably heading for an intersection?

Ask yourself what big leap in life you’ve put off so far, such as quitting your miserable job to start your dream business; end a tumultuous relationship; Tell your alpha in-laws you don’t want them to host the next Christmas dinner, etc.

Why are these dreams rarely clear?

Again, this goes back to the symbol of feeling like you’re losing control – be it in your life overall, in specific aspects like weight control or finances, or the powerlessness to go back in time to redesign your life. If these dreams were lucid, it would indicate some level of control in the dream. So it makes perfect sense that you are never (or rarely) aware that you are dreaming in these dreams.

The car as a perfect symbol for loss of control

In waking life our cars hold significant meaning and importance. Do you remember the last time your car was in the workshop for a few days? How have you felt depending on friends, co-workers and family to lug you around? Even if you’ve used Uber, Lyft, or rented a car, let’s face it, not having your own working vehicle felt like a lot of control was lost during that time.

Do you remember when you got your first car? Wow, you have so much more control over your life!

Many car dreams relate—in some form or form—to elements of control in our lives.

If you were born long before the automobile was invented, you probably would have dreamed of being in a horse-drawn carriage or buggy instead of a car. No matter what you have done, the chariot in the dream is always going backwards, either it is forcing the horses to go backwards or the horses are going backwards and forcing the chariot to go backwards.

Our primary mode of transportation symbolizes our independence and sense of control in real life, even if it feels like your whole life is going down the drain.
