Everyone knows Freddie Mercury as a great artist and leader of Queen. But only one woman stood by his side when he was still a complete stranger. And she didn’t abandon him when the musician was crippled by illness. Mary Austin is Freddie Mercury’s great love and his only friend.

O awesome.club loves Queen and Freddie Mercury. Also, we love romantic stories. So today’s is dedicated to the love and friendship of a simple girl and a world famous musician.

Start

Mary Austin and Freddie Mercury met thanks to their love of pretty clothes. Mary worked at a London clothing store called Biba, and Freddie made a living selling vintage clothes with his friend Roger Taylor (Queen drummer) in Kensington Market. People still didn’t know the name of Freddie Mercury: it was a year before the emergence of the group Queen.

Mary Austin was born into a deaf-mute family and communicated with her parents through sign language. But, on the other hand, this family was no different from many others: her father worked as a plasterer on construction sites and her mother was a maid. The short and fragile girl immediately attracted the attention of the future rock idol. It’s true that Mary was a little surprised: Freddie always dressed flashy. In front of her appeared a 24-year-old long-haired rebel, dressed in an extravagant outfit, which, of course, greatly distracted the average and normal girl.

Mary remembers that at that time they were very poor, and their romance was similar to the relationship of thousands of couples. Young people listened to music, went for walks, but could not afford any extra whims. Life for budding musicians in London was not easy in the 1970s as there were thousands of them.

the path of glory

Within a few months of dating, the young people began to live together in a small apartment. Soon the legendary Queen quartet would appear that would conquer the whole world. But until then no one knew the band, and the couple lived very modestly: Freddie writing songs, and Mary being a true friend in combat, supporting him.

In 1973, Queen released their first album. Life improved little by little, and the couple managed to rent an apartment in an upscale area of London. Freddie Mercury composed the ballad “Love of my Life” and dedicated it to Mary. He also proposed marriage to her. True, the proposal was made with Mercury’s inherent sense of humor:

“Then when I was 23, he gave me a big box for Christmas. Inside was another box, then another, and so on, it was one of his jokes. In the end, I found a beautiful jade ring in the last box. I looked at him and gasped. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t understand what’s going on.’ It was absolutely not what I expected. So I asked him, ‘Which hand should I put it in? And he said, ‘On the ring finger of your left hand.’ And he added, ‘Will you marry me?’ I was surprised and just whispered, ‘Yes, I agree to marry you’.

Freddie introduced his girlfriend to his mother. Jer Bulsara was delighted with her son’s choice and dreamed that they would marry and have children. But the wedding never took place. The engagement lasted three years and ended up separating.

After the first album, the band released two more a year apart. Queen was gaining popularity, Freddie had a lot of fans. And Mary felt like an outsider in the singer’s new world.

“Some time later, I saw a wonderful vintage wedding dress in a boutique, and when Freddie didn’t say anything else about the wedding, I asked, ‘Is it time to buy a dress?’ But his answer was ‘No’. She refused the idea, as if nothing had happened. I was very disappointed. Everything was getting very complicated and our relationship went through a lot of changes.”

The break up

Freddie came home later and later, and the relationship deteriorated. After a while, he told Mary about his homosexuality. She recalled that they always tried to be honest with each other and avoid scandal. Their romance ended, but the friendship and platonic love between the great rock singer and the simple girl lasted until the end.

After the separation, Mercury convinced Mary not to leave him, and the girl settled in the neighborhood next to the singer’s house and was always by his side: she accompanied Freddie on concerts and outings, worked as his assistant.

Of course, Mary Austin also had her personal life, just like Freddie Mercury. She had two children, but never married the children’s father. Freddie Mercury even became the godfather to his eldest son. At that moment, Freddie painfully looked for love, he was harassed by fans, but to receive affection and support, he looked to Mary.

“All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but that’s just impossible, the only friend I have is Mary, and I don’t need anyone else. To me, she was my de facto partner. For me it was a marriage… we believe in each other. For me, that’s enough. I could not love a man as I loved Mary.”

The disease and the end of the story

The fact that Freddie Mercury had HIV at first was only known to two people: Mary Austin and Jim Hutton. When illness disabled the singer, these two did not abandon him for a single moment. Mary, because she was a loyal lifelong friend and Jim was the star’s last lover.

Hutton himself lived with HIV for nearly 20 years and died in 2010 of lung cancer.

In 1991, Mercury lost his eyesight and barely got out of bed. He stopped taking pills and refused to fight for his life. Mary and Jim were there: they remembered old times, watched the recordings of Queen concerts, laughed and cried together.

“Our relationship is pure friendship, but friendship at the highest level is instinctual. I still love her. Maybe we’ll grow old together.”

Will and funeral

Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991. Before his death, he made a will whereby most of his income (present and future) and the huge Garden Lodge mansion in London went to Mary Austin.

“It could have been my wife, and it would all have belonged to you anyway.”

Mary claims that Mercury’s friends and colleagues turned away from her as soon as they learned that he had left her most of his fortune. After the death of her friend, she was left alone and fought for a long time with the tax authorities, who threatened to take the mansion away from her.

Another important point of Freddie’s last will was the funeral. The singer wanted Mary Austin to scatter her ashes, only the place had to remain a secret. He feared that strange people would pile into his grave and he did not want anyone to desecrate his place.
last refuge.

Mary kept the urn of Mercury’s ashes for two years and then scattered them. She complied with his request: no one knows where the ashes of the great Freddie Mercury were thrown.

“I’ve never cheated on Freddie in my life and I won’t cheat on him now.”

Queen fans have a few theories in this regard. First: Mary took the singer’s ashes to his homeland in Zanzibar, Africa. Second: Freddie found his last refuge in the favorite garden of his mansion “Garden Lodge”. Third: recently, in one of London’s cemeteries, admirers of the singer discovered a commemorative plaque with the name of Farrukh Bulsara (Mercury’s real name). But Mary Austin does not confirm any of these conjectures.

the actuality

In 2018, Mary Austin turned 67. She lives in Mercury’s mansion behind insurmountable walls and doesn’t speak to journalists. Mary refused to participate in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsodybut read the script and approved it.

Queen fans don’t like Mary Austin very much. Freddie Mercury admirers from around the world flock to the Garden Lodge mansion in London to leave their flowers, drawings and poems in memory of the great musician. But Mary Austin ordered the removal of all memorabilia from the bars and entrance to the mansion. The walls are covered in acrylic, which makes it impossible to leave
the memories.

But Freddie Mercury’s mother and sister Kashmir express their great appreciation to Mary and say she is part of the Bulsara family.
