10+ Foods That Can Last for Years When Stored The Right Way

There isn’t even a positive factor in wasting food. Therefore, it is essential to know how to properly store food so that it lasts as long as possible. Practice, by the way, can even lead to the discovery of something delicious. Know, for example, that sushi emerged as a way to keep fish edible for longer.

We, from awesome.club, we love everything to do with food. Precisely for this reason, we present below tips involving foods capable of gaining a longer shelf life when stored correctly.

1. Berries: Wash and freeze

The berries guarantee a very special flavor to several recipes, making, for example, any shake even more delicious. However, they don’t last long. The best way to deal with this is to freeze it. That way, they can be consumed within a year.
Before freezing these fruits, you must wash them under running water and dry them to prevent them from spoiling. Place the berries in plastic bags before placing them in the freezer.

2. Vegetables: make preserves

Freezing is not the only possible way to keep vegetables good for consumption: canning also serves to make them last longer. Almost any type of vegetable makes good preserves. Cucumber, for example, turns into a pickle and lasts about two years.
However, the rule does not work for all vegetables: canned tomatoes can be consumed within a month.
To make a preserve, just keep the vegetables in a mixture of vinegar, water and salt (in some cases, it’s good to add sugar to improve the flavor).

3. Carrots: make chips with them

Carrots are ingredients that many people like to have on hand when cooking, but there is a way to make them last longer. Cut and dry, making chips. When dehydrated, carrots can be eaten for up to 25 years.

4. Apples: dehydrate

When it comes to fruit, apples, after being dehydrated, last an average of six months. They can last up to a year if frozen.
Slice the apples and pass them through the dehydrator. Keep the pieces in plastic bags with airtight seals or in vacuum-sealed containers.

5. Nuts: pack and freeze

Many nuts serve as great sources of protein, and you can keep them from going rancid after a while. For this, it is crucial to leave them tightly closed and inside the freezer. Some can last up to two years.
Certain oilseeds, incidentally, last longer than others – almonds, for example, are known for greater durability.

6. Beans: best in the can

Beans are a very versatile food. It can be served as a main course or a side dish. And here’s the tip: keeping the beans stuck can make them last from three to five years.
For canning, boil the food for two minutes, remove from the heat and let it soak for an hour before draining. Cover the grains with fresh water and bring them to a boil for 30 minutes. Add salt and place the beans in a container along with the cooking water, leaving about 2.5 centimeters of free space above it.

7. Maple Syrup: Freeze

As long as it’s frozen, maple syrup can be stored indefinitely. And while your first idea might be using the ingredient to go with pancakes, know that the syrup can be used in a variety of ways. There are even those who make sweets from it!

8. Fish: buy canned

Good quality canned fish, like tuna, will last a long time in the cupboard: up to three years. However, it is good to remember: once the package is opened, the fish must be consumed in a short time.
Once opened, it lasts a few days in the fridge and only a few months in the freezer.

9. Honey: keep out of the sun

Honey can be consumed in natura, either to replace sugar or as a natural solution against sore throat. But it’s good to know that the product can crystallize and that commercial honey usually has an expiration date. However, when well stored, away from the sun, the product lasts almost forever. So much so that honey has been found intact inside ancient Egyptian tombs. Just leave the food in a cool container, protected from sunlight, preferably in the same original packaging as the product.

10. Milk: turn into powder

Milk generally doesn’t have a very long shelf life, even when in the fridge. But it is possible to ensure that the product can be consumed for a longer time, betting on its powdered version. Thus, it can be valid for up to 25 years.
Of course, you can buy milk already in powder form, but there are ways to transform it from its liquid version. Just put the milk in a dehydrator until it gets a “flaky” texture. Other alternatives are to mix or condense the milk until it turns into a fine powder, which should be kept in a sealed glass container.

11. Vinegar: Store With Care

Vinegar and honey are seen as diametrically opposed, but the products have something in common: both can last indefinitely.
If, on the one hand, vinegar takes time to stop being safe for consumption, to maintain all its properties it must be left in a sealed container, away from light and heat. Thus, it can be used within two years after opening with the same flavor.
