11 Female Characters Who Should Evoke Good Feelings in the Audience, But Provoked the Opposite

Characters who are apparently good in books and movies are created so that we empathize with them and anger the villains. But this is pure theory. In fact, villains often strike us as much more charismatic than the good guys, and characters presented to us as positive irritate more than inveterate villains.

we, from awesome.clubwe once again review popular series and movies to discuss a little bit about the behavior of “positive” characters who turned out not to be all that pleasant.

Scarlett O’Hara (Gone with the Wind🇧🇷

Many talk about Scarlett as a strong, independent woman. Yes, she is really capable of amazing things for a girl from that era. For example, managing a sawmill alone and finding a solution for any situation. But that’s not what ends up irritating her, it’s her pathological inability to hear others and think about others. Scarlett has gathered in herself all the conceivable and inconceivable stereotypes about a woman’s character: she is passionate about money, she is impulsive and capricious.

Catelyn Stark (game of Thrones🇧🇷

Catelyn is a positive character. So positive that it’s even hard to bear so much positivity. She, of course, is a faithful wife to her husband and a loving mother. But is she really that good? Catelyn is, figuratively speaking, short-sighted (however, this trait is, in one way or another, inherent in all Starks). Not understanding the situations, she commits impulsive actions that later cost House Stark dearly. See, for example, Tyrion’s reckless capture or Jaime’s release.

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter🇧🇷

Hermione is very smart. But apparently she believes her mind allows her to behave the way she wants. For example, she hates guesswork, and for all her love of discipline and learning, she allows herself to be rude to her teacher and skip classes on her own initiative. Hermione, by the way, is not without double standards of behavior: when Professor Snape snaps at her in class, she falls silent. But at the same time, she believes that Professor Trelawney can be mistreated for nothing. This is not the kind of behavior we would expect from a girl zealous in protecting house-elves from hard work.

Daenerys Targaryen (game of Thrones🇧🇷

if you are a fan of game of Thrones, knows that there is no option to be neutral towards Daenerys. This heroine can either be loved wholeheartedly (when we look at how she seeks to revive the greatness of the Targaryens) or make eyes roll when she appears on the scene and many fans have gone all that way. By the end of the series, all of the surviving characters gained experience and became smarter, while Daenerys seemed to remain too childish—she just acquired a few fire-breathing dragons and a lot of grudge in her heart. The character simply becomes incapable of making balanced, “adult” decisions and slowing down when necessary.

Sabrina Spellman (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina🇧🇷

Sabrina’s new story has become darker and more mature, unlike Sabrina herself. The actions of any of the characters in the series no longer stand out by logic, but the behavior of the main character surpassed them all — this, even considering that her intentions seem to be of the best; she sincerely dreams of world peace and wants to help everyone, even if it threatens her own life. However, she does it so thoughtlessly that later on more reasonable people have to correct the young woman’s mistakes. From season to season, Sabrina, as a character, practically doesn’t change, doesn’t develop and doesn’t get any wiser, but she continues to “walk in the same ball” and do stupid things.

Skyler White (breaking bad🇧🇷

Compared to Skyler, even criminal Walter White seems to have a good heart. The producers probably wanted to make her a reasonable, moral character whose positivity would serve as a counterweight to Walter’s immoral lifestyle, but she turned out to be a true villain. When she finds out what her husband is really doing, she sees him as just a lawbreaker, refuses to support him and ruins his life, but allows herself to spend the money earned on dishonest deals. Add to that the scandals Skyler caused Walter and it becomes clear why most fans of the series speak negatively of her.

king (Star Warstrilogy)

in the new trilogy Star Wars, fans are outraged by a lot, but we will deal specifically with the protagonist. Rey is a new generation Jedi, and over the course of the films, she learns to control the Force and fight evil, including within herself. Many people, by the way, are irritated by the fact that Rey is a typical “Mary Sue” (a character endowed with exaggerated and unrealistic virtues, skills and luck). A young orphan, a talented mechanic, a warrior and an experienced spaceship pilot who later discovered the Force in herself. Rey herself, by the way, with enviable consistency, tries to prove to Kylo Ren that he is really good and often gets into trouble, which she easily gets out of thanks to luck or the Force.

Lori Grimes (The Walking Dead🇧🇷

The screenwriter and comic book writer who created Lori had thought she would get a bigger reaction in people’s hearts. But from the show’s first few episodes, the character evokes very few positive emotions: while her husband Rick is presumed dead, she almost immediately begins an affair with his best friend. Perhaps her husband, who eventually came back alive, has forgiven her, but the audience has not. Throughout the series, Lori is irrationally rude to Rick. And his constant mood swings might not hurt anyone in real life, but in the conditions of a zombie apocalypse, discord within the group only exacerbates the situation.

Claire Browne (The Good Doctor: The Good Doctor🇧🇷

Rita Bennett Morgan (dexter🇧🇷

Rita is absurdly positive. And if some of the characters in this post bother with their pathological incapacity for self-analysis, in this heroine, on the contrary, self-analysis and reflection form the basis of her personality and character. And she became especially unbearable after her marriage to Dexter Morgan. Yes, Rita has suffered in a relationship with her ex-husband and gained psychological trauma, but sometimes even Dexter himself seems almost normal next to her.

Bella Swan (Twilight🇧🇷

For Swan, the producers created the image of a kind of good girl, cute and shy, a little weird and touchingly in love. But in truth, she is still a manipulator and behaves very selfishly towards everyone who loves her. Swan promotes scenes of disobedience towards her father, runs away from Edward, who tried to protect her from dangerous contact with Jacob, and occasionally flirts with Jacob himself, giving him false hope and not caring too much about her feelings. Also, Bella regularly follows her wishes, exposing herself and others to danger and every time someone has to save her.

If a hero evokes vivid, even negative, emotions, it means that he has done a great job on his image. Which series and movie characters infuriate or irritate you?
