The real story behind The Smurfs and why they scared you

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you probably remember The Smurfsthose little blues who lived in an enchanted forest and spent their time trying to protect their idyllic world from Gargamel’s attacks.

While this cartoon was loved by many, others were very afraid of it and preferred not to watch it. Over the years, dark and even economic theories have even emerged about them.

The story of The Smurfs

The Smurfs were born in 1958, created by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo. They started appearing in newspapers, then in their own comics.

The original name is Schtroumpf, which the creator came up with when he forgot the word for ‘salt’ at a dinner with a friend.

In Spanish, we owe the name SMURFS to the Spanish editor Miguel Agustí, who while searching for the name came across a statue of Patufet, a creature from Catalan mythology. This is how it was exported to the entire Hispanic world.

In 1981, the American company Hanna-Barbera decided to make a cartoon about The Smurfs and the little ones rose to world fame (Hanna-Barbera created Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and many other cartoons that accompanied your childhood and that of your friends. parents).

What is The Smurfs about?

The story is the following: in a mushroom village, there live some magical beings, The Smurfs, who are all blue and all almost the same, with white pants and a white hat, except for Papa Smurf who dresses in red.

The Smurfs are always tried to be captured by a villain named Gargamel who lives with his cat Azrael, who wants to turn them into gold. One day, to trick the Smurfs, he creates Smurfette.

But the plan doesn’t go well, Papa Smurf helps her and Smurfette becomes the only woman in the village (although over time more female Smurfs were created).

In each episode, the Smurfs had to flee from Gargamel or some other villain of the moment. Each Smurf is named after his main characteristic (like the dwarfs in Snow White): Greedy Smurf, Vain Smurf, Sportsman Smurf.

Why do they say it is diabolical?

Although more than 100 little ones live in the Smurfs’ village, the protagonists were 8. According to some internet theorists, these represent the deadly sins and the devil.

I explain.

Sweet tooth: Greed

Cook: Gluttony

Grumpy: Anger

Vain: Vanity

Sleepyhead: Laziness

Philosopher: Envy

Smurfette: Lust

And the eighth? The top would be Papa Smurf, with his red devil-colored suit, who guides the little sins.

The curious thing is that Gargamel, the Smurfs’ main enemy, is dressed in the clothes of a Dominican monk, and his cat is called Azrael (another way of calling Israel).

So the biblical details are present.

Demonic and communist smurfs

For many, the above theory indicates that the creator of the Smurfs was an anti-religion, since the villain is the representative of the church, and the Smurfs live happily in sin.

Not only that, but by having a collaborative economy and without money, they were also accused of being communists.

The creator, and the creator’s son, have disproved these theories.

What do you think? Did you like them or did they scare you?
