The hair schedule for curly hair is a weekly treatment routine with the aim of hydrating, nourishing and rebuilding the strands, defining the curls and leaving the strands softer and shiny. Because they have their own characteristics and needs, curly hair needs special care. In this article, curl expert Carol Santos explains how to treat curls at home. Check out!
What is a hair schedule for curly hair?
According to Carol Santos, the “hair schedule is a sequence of treatments to be performed with the function of maintaining or improving the quality of the hair strands in some scope, whether in its structure, texture, color, porosity, etc.”
The hair schedule started to be very successful on the internet, when many women were looking for cheaper ways to take care of their hair. In general, it involves 3 fundamental steps: hydration, which consists of replacing the hair with water, nutrition, which returns oil and lipids, and reconstruction, which restores the hair mass.
Main care
To bring the desired results, it is essential to follow each step weekly, as well as to use the right products for each type of yarn. For curly hair in general, Carol Santos lists the main precautions.
“Curly hair (if not chemically treated) has its basic needs: water and lipid replacement. This is because they have fewer cuticular layers, which are the nutrient retention pockets. Having less absorption capacity, these hairs need double care”, explains the specialist.
But to get the schedule right, it is essential to recognize the particular needs of each strand. Therefore, Carol recommends some tests that detect the need for each hair. “We can observe this hair and see if it is opaque or if it has shine. Endurance tests to check its elasticity are also great allies. There is also the glass of water test, in which a strand of hair is placed in a half-filled glass of water. If the hair floats, it is a sign that it is healthy, but if it sinks, it means that it needs treatment.”
Despite these home tests, Carol warns that the best way to detect the need for hair is to consult a professional, “the best person to diagnose hair is the hairdresser, but he will not be the only one to participate in this process. The client needs to report her daily care, finishing and sensations regarding texture. Active listening on the part of the professional and the participation of the client can provide true miracles”, she explains.
Hair schedule table for curly hair
Curl specialist Carol Santos has set up a schedule for curly hair, especially for those who treat their locks without chemicals. The treatment is especially focused on hair nutrition, a step responsible for returning lipids and oil to the hair. Check out!
- Week 01 – Nutrition | reconstruction | nutrition: start your week with nutrition. Use “products based on coconut oil, castor oil, argan, avocado, grape seed, among others, or butters such as murumuru and shea for very frizzy hair.” For the reconstruction stage, look for products with proteins and amino acids. “Protein from soy, wheat, etc. can be used”, explains Carol.
- Week 02 – hydration | nutrition | hydration: “the hydration product may contain ingredients such as panthenol, Aloe Vera, glycerol, glycerin and botanical extracts that provide lightness and hydration”.
- Week 03 – Nutrition | reconstruction | Nutrition: “Repeat the process the other week. Now, instead of using masks based on oils or butters, you can do wetting. I really like coconut oil as it leaves my hair soft, frizz-free and with less volume”.
- Week 04 – hydration | nutrition | hydration: “hydration is one of the most important processes for curly hair, as it helps to reduce the frizz of the wires, leaving the hair more aligned, soft and shiny”.
According to Carol, this is a schedule suitable for curly women in general who take care of their hair without the use of chemicals. For chemically treated curly hair, Carol recommends focusing more on reconstruction. “In the case of chemically treated hair, we will insert reconstruction as a primary care, as the chemistry acts on this hair removing cuticular layers, and as this hair is already thinner, it ends up being more damaged than other hair types”, she emphasizes.
