Tattoos to Honor the Departed

Although death is one of the hardest things we can face, grief is inevitable. If you are passionate about tattoos and looking for inspiration to honor someone dear to you who has passed away, check out some inspirations and get ready to be moved by touching stories from people who have also gone through it.

“As my mother always says… I am my father’s copy! From the way to the appearance, what changes is that I am him in the female version (laughs). I grew up with this parameter always in evidence for everyone in the family and, today, I am very proud to be so similar to him. When I lost my father, I realized that I wanted a little more of him in me. I combined that desire with my interest in tattoos and chose to do something original, that only I had. So I went through some old documents and found his signature. Beautiful, delicate and with his trademark, his total characteristic. I opted for one of the smaller ones, to give the impression that he had tattooed me himself. And the result was exactly this: it looks like he signed on me! When I thought of tattooing something that would bring me closer to my father, in addition to the signature, several songs came to mind that I listened to because of the moment I was living, excerpts or phrases that spoke a lot about us – or a lot of him – but nothing really touched me. Suddenly, I decided to listen to a good samba, as usual, and a super old song appeared. This song is not even part of my time, but I remember listening to it, in my childhood, next to my father. Great Nelson Gonçalves, with the music at that table, awakened in me exactly what I wanted to say. And the choice was a beautiful passage that truly portrays what my father was to me and is to the woman I have become: ‘And in his eyes there was so much sparkle that more than his son I became his fan!’” (Manuela Cavalcanti da Silva)

“My brother and I were very close. Even though there were 3 of us, Kleudo was like a father to me, since ours had died when my mother was pregnant with me. He always encouraged me to work and pursue a better life. And, in that, he was an example, because he helped a lot around the house, always happy and with a smile on his face. When he was in his last year of college, he had an accident and was in a coma for 20 days, later passing away. I hadn’t been able to say good bye to him that day, because I was taking a shower. A few months after he died, I wanted to get a tattoo to honor him. So I talked to the tattoo artist and we came up with the idea of the black heart with bruised wings. It also has my brother’s nickname – Queen – and the year of his birth and death. I already had some tattoos and my mother always disapproved. But, when she saw this one, I understood from her tears that it was okay.” (Francisco Lima)

“I got Mel when I was 7 years old and she was the love of my life. She had a birthday 3 days away from mine and that brought us closer. She was the nicest dog that ever existed on the face of the Earth: she slept with me practically every day and was the companion of the house. It was my first experience with death and it was much worse than I imagined… A month after she died, I got this tattoo and it’s my baby. On April 11th, it will be a year since she left, a year of endless nostalgia, a year that my life is not the same.” (Camila Kimura)
