Tampon: clarified doubts, how and when to use it

As much as the tampon is not a new product, its use still raises doubts and even some myths. It is most commonly used in punctual situations, such as going to the beach or the pool, but it can be used every day of menstruation, as long as with some care. Learn how to use and clarify your doubts about the product.

How to use tampon

Inserting a tampon is not difficult, but it does require some basic care. Check the step by step:

  1. Wash the hands;
  2. Find a comfortable position to put the pad, some suggestions are sitting on the toilet, standing with one of your legs supported on the toilet or lying down with the feathers flexed;
  3. Remove the plastic that protects the pad and stretch the string that comes with the pad;
  4. Hold the pad with your thumb and middle finger;
  5. Place your index finger on the base of the pad (where the string comes out);
  6. With the other hand, open the labia minora and slowly insert the tampon into the vagina until you feel that the tampon “has hit an obstacle”;
  7. The absorbent string should naturally stick out.

The first time it may be a little uncomfortable to put on the tampon, however, the tendency is to put it on with more practice in the next few times and, when inserted correctly, it should not cause pain or discomfort.

8 questions answered about tampons

There are doubts about who can or cannot use the tampon and about its safety. 1. What precautions does the use of tampon require? “Washing hands before inserting or removing the absorbent; change it at most every 4 hours, even if the menstrual flow is small; avoid using it every day, as the heat and humidity, which increase inside the vagina, also increase the risk of infection; remove the tampon if you are going to have sexual intercourse (there is an increased risk of infection and the impact of the tampon during penetration can cause damage to the bottom of the vagina)”, guides Karina.

2. What to do if the string breaks? “If the tampon string breaks, you should try to take it off with your own fingers,” says Karina.

3. Is it dangerous to use tampon? “If used correctly, no, as it is effective and safe for both bleeding containment and women’s health. It is a hygienic form of protection because, as the bleeding does not appear, there is a reduction in the discomfort of the period and the absorbent allows the safe practice of physical exercises and avoids the characteristic menstrual odor”, says Karina.

4. How to choose the size of tampon? “The size of the pad is suitable according to the menstrual volume, that is, the more intense the flow, the larger the pad should be. That is, the rule is the same for both the external and internal absorbent. The vagina is elastic and adapts to any size of tampon; the super, for example, is indicated for women who have an abundant flow, and the mini for a small flow”, comments the gynecologist.

5. Who can use it and who can’t? “Any woman can use a tampon, even those who have never had sex, as long as the gynecologist has previously examined her and the type of hymen allows its use (most hymens are circular and do not offer resistance, but there are others types of hymen that prevent the passage of the absorbent)”, explains Karina.

6. How long can I keep the tampon? Karina remembers the importance of changing it, at most, every 4 hours.

7. Can I enter the pool or sea with a tampon? “Yes, it is a great solution for women to be able to go to the beach, pool or do physical exercises during their menstrual period”, says the gynecologist.

8. Can it cause an infection? “The cotton in the pad absorbs the flow and keeps the blood in the vagina. If this exposure exceeds eight hours, there is a risk of the growth of bacteria capable of altering the flora of the vagina, causing genital infections, the main one being toxic shock syndrome, a disease that can be fatal, especially when caused by streptococci. However, in recent years, changes have been made to the composition of tampons, establishing a standard for their use, thus reducing the number of occurrences of this syndrome”, explains Karina.

These are the main doubts about the use of internal absorbent. But if you have other questions, be sure to report them to your gynecologist.
