Sheikha Mozah is a clear example that Middle Eastern women can change the world too

Often, the image of women in Arab countries is that they always remain in the shadow of men. But with her personality, Sheikha Mozah (the second of the Emir of Qatar’s three wives) defies all stereotypes about Middle Eastern women. Always wearing unique and impeccable clothes and with a regal bearing, she has not only become a style icon in the Arab world, but also a prominent public personality.

Mozah was born into a wealthy family. His father was a well-known Qatari businessman. Mozah’s childhood and youth were similar to Eastern fairy tale stories. At age 18, she met the future emir of Qatar, then-Prince Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, whom she married years later.

Unlike the rooted Eastern order, the girl was in no hurry to become a wife, studied Psychology at the University of Qatar, and then did internships in the USA. Upon returning to his country, Mozah, being the sheikh’s second wife, gave birth to their first child. In the early years of her new life, she devoted herself to taking care of the children. In all, there were 7 heirs and one of her sons became the successor to the throne and the fourth emir of Qatar, although the sheikh had 25 children with his wives.

Mozah has always been a strong-willed woman. Although she was not the emir’s first wife, she was able to participate in government affairs, something that did not go unnoticed by Qatari society. Her clothes also made a big impact, as the sheikh allowed his wife not to wear the hijab. So she just covered her head with elegant turbans.

His bold style gave impetus to the change. In society, they started to talk a lot about their stylish, bright, beautiful and current clothes. Among Arab leaders, the third emir of Qatar has always been considered a progressive leader thanks in large part to his wife’s humanitarian and charitable programs. Mozah is an active public personality. She is UNESCO’s special ambassador for basic and higher education.

And this is not just a decorative post, as many might think. Mozah has invested years in the fight for children’s equitable access to education. She traveled the planet with this important mission, meeting with state leaders and philanthropists, raising awareness of the problem.

His foundation, Educate a Child, helps children who live in the poorest corners of the planet and where they are also victims of war and conflict, giving them the opportunity to have a better life by going to school. Thanks to the Mozah foundation, 10 million children in 6 years started attending school.

This amazing woman has also made huge financial contributions to improving the lives of her fellow citizens. Qatari women owe Mozah a considerable improvement in their position. Today, Qatar is considered one of the most liberal Arab countries in terms of women’s rights: they have the right to vote, drive and dress less strictly than in neighboring countries. Thanks to access to education and employment, women are now part of the country’s cabinet of ministers.
