Self-taught, artist from Guarujá has already exhibited works in Paris and Miami

Uniting sustainability and art. that’s what Silvana Perez does in his works. Alone, the artist learned to make mosaic in 2001 and today makes collages with magazine and newspaper paper, forming remarkable portraits of women and children and taking the art abroad.

“I have always been interested in art since I was a child. My favorite subject at school was always Art”, says Silvana during a conversation with CLAUDIA🇧🇷 In his youth, he participated in a painting course in Catanduva, in the interior of São Paulo, his hometown. Afterwards, he started studying the piano, but did not graduate, as he decided to get married and move to the coast of São Paulo. By irony of fate, it was precisely the marriage that made her connect with the mosaic.

“I worked with my husband in a shop before making collages. I assisted customers and when there was no one to assist, I made the conventional mosaics and displayed them in the store”, revealed Silvana. She taught herself the art, seeing works in magazines and trying to do the same. “Practicing endlessly is the best way to learn. And it’s something I like to do,” she says.

In 2015, she left the conventional mosaic and ventured into making collages with paper🇧🇷 Using magazines that would otherwise be discarded, Silvana selects and cuts pieces to form the figures in her work. “I use a lot of cosmetic magazines, which have a lot of colors and different skin tones. I put a sheet underneath and separate what I’m going to use”, explains the artist.

Nowadays, she receives donations from publishers, old and new magazines, and clients – Silvana and her husband have a studio and a gallery, both in Guarujá, where they currently live.

Most of his works are portraits of women and children. “I admire the strength of women and the space they have been gaining in society. In addition to the feminine traits that are delicate and at the same time expressive”, explains the artist. She uses a photograph as a base, draws what she wants to do on the canvas and then glues the little pieces of paper on top. By reusing magazines that could be thrown away, collage is considered a sustainable art.

international recognition

Silvana’s talent, right from the start, caught the attention of curator Heloiza Azevedo, who lives in Paris. She contacted the artist, who sent her resume. Two years after starting to work with collage, in 2017, Silvana had her works exhibited at the Carrousel du Louvre🇧🇷

“It was something very special. It’s a difficult feeling to explain, because there are many great artists in Brazil, but not everyone has the opportunity. I had it and, even with small conditions, I did everything to be able to participate in the exhibitions”, he reports. “I didn’t have a resume ready when Heloiza asked me, because it’s difficult to work with art in Brazil, but even so, I created one quickly and sent it”, she completes.

And do not stop there. His works were also exhibited at the MoLA (Museum of Living Art), also from Paris, in October of the same year. In 2018, she was exhibited again at the Carrousel Du Louvre and, subsequently, had two works awarded at the Art & Designer Galleryfrom Miami.

For the future, Silvana wants to be recognized in the country for her collage work. “I want the art to be more publicized, although now with the media and the internet this is getting better. My goal is to promote art and serve as an inspiration to other people”.
