Scientist tries to find out who is the protagonist of the series Friends

15 years ago, in 2004, the last episode of the series aired friends🇧🇷 The comedy became such a successful cultural phenomenon that it also caught the attention of the scientific community. Using the series as an example, characteristics of popular television were studied and aspects related to gender stereotypes were explored. Meanwhile, Yashu Seth, an academic who specializes in machines, has carried out his personal research and turned the series’ characters into numbers and graphs to define who, after all, is the protagonist.

Today the awesome.club wants to share with you some results of this research whose main objective was to find out who is the main character of the series by analyzing their numbers.

According to the academic, the idea for the study came during an afternoon, while he was watching one of his favorite episodes: the one in which Ross gets a tan. When looking at the characters, he wondered: who is the real protagonist of the series? The Ross and Rachel couple? Chandler the sarcastic? Monica, the cleaning junkie? The giddy heartthrob, Joey? Or the crowd’s favorite singer, Phoebe?

He decided to look into this on the basis of a quantitative method. He gathered the data from the series and put it into a special program. The computer turned the scenes and characters into structured tables that allowed Seth to come to some conclusions.

The characters with the most sentences are Ross and Rachel

Total words spoken by character:

The most popular character in the series is Chandler.

The number of scenes each character appears in:

Here, we also have a beautiful dispute. However, who we see most on the screen is Chandler. He appears in over 1,400 scenes. The leaders of the previous question, Rachel and Ross, are a little behind, with 1,370 and 1,330 scenes, respectively. Lastly, once again, we have Phoebe, with just over 1,250 scenes.

Ross has the most scenes alone

The number of lonely scenes of each character:

Here, the researcher counted all the scenes in which the characters appear on the screen alone or surrounded by other people (supporters, not the 6 protagonists). The difference is quite big. the leader is Ross, who appears in nearly 150 scenes alone. Rachel lags far behind him and appears in fourth place. In second place, we see Joey, with 130 scenes. Monica spends the least amount of time alone on screen: she appears in just over 50 scenes.

Rachel is mentioned in episode titles most often

The number of times each character is mentioned in the episode titles:

Once again, leaders are Rachel (his name appears in the title of 27 episodes) and Ross (mentioned 24 times). Once again, Monica was in last place: her name appears in the title of only 8 episodes.

Conclusion: the main character of the series is Ross Geller

Bonus: the main couple of the series

If you thought that, once again, we would have Ross and Rachel, you are wrong. Despite the romance that made fans completely crazy for a long time, the strongest couple in the series is Chandler and Joey🇧🇷 They appear together more often than any other couples.

Main supporting character

If we don’t count the 6 main characters, the one who had the most space and screen time was Gunther, the one in charge of Café Central Perk. Yes, himself, the eternal lover of Rachel.

The main setting of the series is…

It might come as a surprise, but it’s not the Central Perk. The place that appears most in the series is Monica’s apartment, precisely the character that is least shown on the screen according to the other data. In this scenario, 26% of the scenes occur, compared to 16% in Central Perk.

What is your opinion about the study? Do you agree that Ross is the main character of friends🇧🇷 If you could choose, who would it be?
