The editors-in-chief of newspapers and magazines are always very careful when choosing the cover of their publications because they know that it is what most attracts people’s attention at the time of purchase. A well-chosen photo can significantly increase sales, highlight certain subjects and, therefore, raise the name of the magazine. But of course, when the choice is not right, the criticisms are always endless.
O awesome.club decided to do some research on this topic and found some covers of international publications that went down in history. Let’s get to know these stories a little.
1. Glamour, August 1965
Katiti Kironde participated in the contest Best Dressed College Girls (Best Dressed Universities), organized by the magazine Glam🇧🇷 Upon winning, she appeared on the cover of the magazine. Millions of covers were sold, as it was the first time that an African American woman was on the cover of a fashion magazine.
2. Time, April 1997
In 1997, famous television presenter Ellen DeGeneres appeared on the cover of Time magazine with an important statement: ‘Yes, I’m gay’. Much has been said about her homosexuality, but a statement as open as this was met with surprise by many people. After publication, some channels suspended the programs in which she appeared. Today, more powerful than ever, she knows she did well to come out publicly and strongly.
3. People, September 1997
After the tragic accident that took Princess Diana’s life in Paris, People published a photo of her on the cover of the magazine in which she appeared with a tiara, smiling, in black and white. The image remains one of the most beautiful and moving about this story in the world press.
4. Time, September 2001
Three days after the series of terrorist attacks in the United States, on September 11, 2001, a special issue of Time magazine came out. On the cover, an image of the Twin Towers at the time of the attack. In addition to images, the magazine also published comments from people who were lucky enough to survive the tragic attack.
5. Playboy, November 2009
In honor of the series’ 20th anniversary the simpsonsthe magazine playboy decided to publish an image of Marge Simpson on the cover. The protagonist of the series appeared recreating an image of the playboy 1971 in which model Darine Stern did the same.
6. New York, November 2014
An issue of the magazine new York decided to show the language of the modern world and, instead of putting a title, put a big emoji. The cover was considered one of the best in the Business and Technology category, according to the American Association of Publishers and Journalists (ASME).
7. Vogue, March 2017
This cover of Vogue managed to put together 7 very famous models in the same image. The problem in this case was model Gigi Hadid’s arm, which seems too long, causing people to accuse the company of using Photoshop.
8. Paper, March 2018
When the magazine issue Paper came out, many simply did not recognize the woman on the cover. Natural, with beautiful freckles and no makeup, singer Christina Aguilera showed herself like never before. “I am an artist by nature, but the time has come to let go of unnecessary things and also appreciate my natural beauty,” she commented.
9. National Geographic, May 2018
In May 2018, National Geographic magazine launched a campaign called ‘Planet or Plastic?’ and published a photo on the cover in which a large plastic bag imitated an iceberg. The same issue brought other impactful images that show how our planet is immersed in plastic. In this way, the magazine wanted to draw attention to environmental problems and the consequences that this dangerous material represents for the animal world.
