After the success of our list of 215 films for those who love psychology, in this post we are going to list all the TV Series that have a psychological theme, that is, they show the work of professionals in psychology or a similar field, present mental illnesses (such as sociopathy or psychopathy) or are of interest for the depth of personality analysis.

TV Series and Psychology

1) Medium

Medium (in Brazil, A Paranormal) was an American drama television series that premiered on NBC on January 3, 2005 and ended on CBS on January 21, 2011.1 The show was created, produced and directed by Emmy Award winner Glenn Gordon Caron, based on Allison DuBois’s book Don’t Kiss Them Good-Bye.

In Brazil it is shown by Universal Channel and in Portugal it was shown by TVI and AXN and is currently shown by Fox Life. In 2011 it started to be shown in Brazil by Universal Channel.

DuBois, played by Patricia Arquette, is a married woman, mother of three daughters and a law student who has received messages from the dead since she was a child. Since childhood she has struggled to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people.

Fearing that her dreams could affect her mental health, she turns to her husband Joe (Jake Weber), an aerospace engineer who slowly begins to believe that his wife may be telling the truth. But the real challenge will be to convince his boss, Prosecutor Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) and the other doctors of the criminal justice system, that his skills can be real and that they can unravel horrible and violent crimes whose clues lie with those who have already died.

2) In Treatment

In Treatment (br: Em Terapia; pt: Terapia) is an American television series on the HBO channel, winner of a Golden Globe and two Emmys. Produced by Rodrigo García, it narrates the life of a psychotherapist, Doctor Paul Weston, and his weekly sessions with several patients.two It stars Gabriel Byrne, winner of the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series. The series premiered on January 28, 2008, and aired 5 nights a week. The format, script and opening were based on the famous Israeli series Be’tipul, created by Hagai Levi.

For the first season, 43 episodes were filmed,3 covering nine weeks for most patients, except those on Monday and Tuesday, which were only eight weeks. The series was renewed for a second season, with only Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest remaining in the cast.

It also has a Brazilian version entitled Sessão de Terapia and an Argentine version called “En Terapia” (currently available on Netflix).

3) Therapy Session

Sessão de Terapia is a Brazilian television series directed by actor Selton Mello, based directly on the Israeli series BeTipul, created by Israeli psychoanalyst Hagai Levi. It is also based on the American version of the series, entitled In Treatment and starring Gabriel Byrne. It premiered on October 1, 2012 on the GNT channel, at 22:30 and concluded on November 30, totaling 45 episodes. On weekends, the channel aired a marathon with all the episodes of the week: on Saturdays at 22:00, and on Sundays at 18:50.

In June 2013, it was confirmed, through the official page of the series on the social network Facebook, that the recordings of the 2nd season began on the 3rd, with a forecast of two months. The season premiered on October 7, with Selton Mello again in charge of directing, and ended on November 22, after 35 episodes.

The new season is scheduled for August 2014.

4) Lie to me

Lie To Me (in Brazil, Engana-me, se Puder) is an American television series that premiered on FOX on January 21, 2009, arriving in Brazil eight months later (September 29, 2009two ) on the FOX Brazil channel. In Portugal, the series premiered on January 6, 2010 on the FOX channel. Currently in Brazil, it is shown on Rede Record, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at 0:15 am.

The series is being broadcast on Network Ten in Australia and Global TV in Canada. In the United Kingdom, the premiere took place in the spring of 2009, on Sky1.

The main character, Dr. Cal Lightman (played by actor Tim Roth), is aided by his partner Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams), who together spot fraud by looking at body language and micro facial expressions, and use that talent to assist law enforcement with the help of her group of researchers and psychologists. The character Dr. Cal Lightman is based on Paul Ekman, a noted psychologist and expert on body language and facial expressions. This series is similar to the Lifetime TV series Angela’s Eyes.6 Paul Ekman’s scientific work has been developed in Portugal by Armindo Freitas-Magalhães.

5) The Mentalist

The Mentalist (in the original, The Mentalist) is an American police series that premiered on September 23, 2008, on CBS. It revolves around Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) who has a special talent: observing everything in detail. With his enormous power of deduction and observation, he helps the California Bureau of Investigation to solve the most intriguing cases.

The series airs in the United States on CBS and was considered the best debut of 2008, with 15.6 million viewers. In Portugal, the series premiered on May 12, 2009, on an open channel on RTP2, and its premiere on cable was at the end of the summer of 2009 on the AXN and AXN HD channels. In Brazil, the series is shown by Warner Channel and SBT.

On May 10, 2014, CBS announced that the series had been renewed for a seventh season.

6) Criminal Minds

Criminal Minds (Criminal Minds and Criminal Minds on Rede Globo (title in Brazil) or Criminal minds (title in Portugal) is an American crime drama television series about the Behavioral Analysis Unit, an elite FBI squadron based in Quantico, Virginia. The team analyzes the country’s criminal minds and anticipates their next moves before they strike again. In this regard, the series differs from other police dramas by focusing more on the criminal behavior of the suspect than on the crime itself.

The series is produced by The Mark Gordon Company in association with the CBS Television Network and ABC Studios. The original title of Criminal Minds was Quantico, and the Pilot episode was filmed in Vancouver. In the Quantico script, Jason Gideon was called Jason Donovan. On May 20, 2009, the CBS network officially renewed Criminal Minds for a fifth season, which premiered on September 23, 2009 at 9:00 pm.

CBS announced in October of the same year that Legacy Interactive will develop a video game based on the series. The game will require players to examine the crime scene to solve mysterious murders; a spin-off of the series was made and featured Forest Whitaker in the lead role, but the project did not take off and was cancelled.

7) Frasier

Kelsey Grammer plays Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist who returns to his hometown of Seattle to host a radio show. His father, Martin Crane (John Mahoney), ends up moving in with him, causing the two to always argue. His brother, Dr. Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce), is also a psychiatrist and is disputing with Frasier who is the best.

Niles harbors a secret crush on Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves), his father’s physical therapist. He just doesn’t declare his love for her because he is married to Maris, a strange millionaire who never appeared on the program. The characters, throughout the series, only talk about her eccentric behavior and traits, which make her seem horribly bizarre.

8) Dexter

Dexter was an American drama/thriller television series centered on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer with different patterns who works as a forensic analyst specializing in blood shedding patterns in the Miami-Dade County Police Department.1 It is considered one of the best series of current psychopaths.

The show premiered October 1, 2006 on Showtime and aired its final episode on September 22, 2013. Set in Miami, its first season was largely based on Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter, the first of his series of novels. Dexter. Later seasons featured a distinct evolution of Lindsay’s works.
