Polydactyly: what is Marvvila’s condition, from BBB 23? – GOOD SHAPE

During a conversation at the BBB 23 academy, on TV Globo, Marvvilla told to confinement colleague Ricardo who was born with an extra finger on each hand. “This here is a finger”, she said, showing the biodoctor that the fingers were born on the side of the hands, close to the little finger.

According to the singer, several people in her family were born with this condition, which is called polydactyly. “Let’s go: my grandfather, my mother, my mother’s children, my mother’s sister, my cousins, my cousins’ children. Extremely strong genetics,” she listed.

Comparing the extra fingers on both hands, Marvvila reported that they were bigger and that she underwent a procedure to remove them, but that she was not entirely satisfied with the result. “This here was what was left, but he still left a lot. If he had left it the same as this one, it would have been fine. My brother now took it off, you can take it off at the dermatologist ”, she said.

In the chat, the former The Voice confessed that she is still ashamed of the condition and that she would have liked to have pulled out what was left of her extra finger before being confined to the reality show, but, according to her, she did not have time.

“I’m embarrassed. At the last minute I sent a message to the dermatologist and said ‘can you pull this little finger off?’ Then she ‘takes off’. But she didn’t have time, it passed like that and I was already here ”, she started. “Ah, what to do, when I get out of here I’ll take it off”, she finished.

WHAT IS POLYDACTYLY?

According to doctor Marcus Vinícius, plastic surgeon and professor of Medicine at Unifran, polydactyly is an alteration in which the individual has a greater number of fingers or toes, which may be six or more fingers. “This condition can affect only the hands and also only the feet”, details the specialist.

The disease is caused by a genetic issue. “It is a hereditary condition that appears in several generations of the same family and parents can pass it on to their children”, says the doctor.

However, Dr. Marcus Vinícius says that this problem can also develop due to changes during pregnancy, in the period of development of the hands and limbs, but this is not so common.

TREATMENT

In general, a surgical procedure is performed to remove the problem. However, according to the specialist, treatment varies according to anatomical issues.

“The extra fingers can have only skin and soft parts or they can be fully formed, containing bones and joints. This is what determines the treatment, ”she says.

For extra fingers without bone formation and joints, the treatment is simpler. For those who present these parts, the intervention is more complex. “This joint can be shared with another finger considered normal or it can be extra as well. If it is a shared joint, this surgery is more complex than if it is not”, describes the doctor.

Most of the time, this condition does not seriously impair the functionality of the hand or foot, that is, it is not harmful to health. Despite this, the plastic surgeon warns that it can cause aesthetic discomfort and affect the self-esteem of individuals.
