Pay off debts, learn languages and travel. What do we want for 2020?

It’s already a tradition: at the turn of the year, we take some time to think about everything we want to achieve in the months to come and prepare a list of goals. Completing them effectively is something that few manage to do, but that doesn’t stop us from repeating this rite of passage year after year.

A survey made by the application 7 waves investigated what are the main goals of Brazilians for 2020. Based on the responses of its 50,000 active users, the survey found that, in the coming year, the focus will be on paying off debts, being able to travel on vacation and learn a new language. Other goals that appeared among the 10 most common were saving money, exercising more and eating healthier.

For Rodolfo Ribeiro, CEO of the application, the highest concentration of goals in the “Goods” category reflects the current economic scenario in Brazil. “Countries where there is significant unemployment and where people have a significant debt ratio are more likely to have goals that involve assets, mainly paying off debts and saving money”, he explains.

He believes that Brazilians are more aware of the way they consume and are concerned about clearing their name in order to have more negotiating power when thinking, for example, about financing. “With the bills up to date, he can also plan a trip to see the place of his dreams, or even take a course or exchange program to learn a second language, which in the case of 7waves users, have English as a priority”, adds the executive .

It also recommends other goals and suggests actions according to the person’s profile.

In addition to projections for 2020, 7waves analyzed how much Brazilians were procrastinators in 2019. To create the Procrastination Map, the app checked which goals were most postponed throughout the year. As in the Top 20, saving money was in the top spots. The top, however, belongs to the goal related to moving up in the job.

“We understand that every objective depends on the individual, but also suffers from external interference. In our interpretation, moving up a position was a rather postponed goal in 2019, among other things because people who aspire to it generally do not adequately prepare for a new position,” says Rodolfo.

“The expectation of meeting this objective is, on average, 7 months, a period considered short if we evaluate it from the perspective that there is always a need for new knowledge for a higher level.” He believes that the little growth of the national economy can also be an influencing factor, since companies tend to withhold investments and promotions.

For those who intend not to let procrastination win, the executive recommends as a first step to reflect on what one yearns for. Then comes the planning. “Having a step-by-step process that allows for small achievements makes it possible for ambitions to be achieved more fluidly”, he points out. And, of course, always keep your feet on the ground.
