Nostalgia is a sign that we are experiencing something good that is worth remembering.

We talk about longing as if it were something very sad, but that’s not always the case. I think nostalgia is splendid, it means that something good has been experienced and that good memories remain in the head and heart. The important thing is how to deal with this feeling: remembering and, if possible, reliving.

Of course, there are things that hurt a lot, like missing someone or something that we can no longer have, like a loved one or a pet that has passed away. I miss my mother the most, who died very early. My father too, but he lived to be 98 years old. She left long before…

To ease this pain, I try to remember the good things I experienced. And I try to be at peace with myself: there’s no point in crying over what’s gone. What gives is to fill your heart with memories and move on.

Of course when I lose someone dear I react like anyone else. I’m sad, I cry… But after someone leaves, there’s nothing else to do. Enjoy the people you love while they’re alive! Afterwards, we will only have nostalgia left.

Another longing that breaks my heart is that of my grandchildren, who live in the United States. A lot! I’m a doting grandmother. While I’m around, I try to be the best grandmother in the world, giving them lots of love, lots of affection, saying how much I love them! Even far away, they feel my affection. We always talk, and the feeling is immense. Today technology allows us many forms of communication: videos, messages, audios, phone calls… There is always a way to try to alleviate that little pain in the chest.

I also miss places that are meaningful to me, where I had a story, where I went for a nice walk with nice people, calm places to relax. But there is one thing that I miss even more: when people respected others more, when there was more education and, mainly, more love for others. Good weather. Will it not come back?
