no couple

If I were to write a romantic comedy, I couldn’t think of anything as amazing as the story I’m going to tell you. He ate lunch at the poolside bar in her building, alone. Between an email check and a huff to complain about the heat, he saw her entering the bar area. She was beautiful: thin, auburn hair, white, with a smile so beautiful and spontaneous that you even look around for the cameras – no one smiles like that naturally. Hardly anyone, because she smiles.

Moving on: she enters the bar area and he automatically moves himself so he can face her. As she eats lunch with her mother at the next table, he just thinks that he needs to bring up a conversation with her anyway. Until she and her mom start talking about a dog they’ve adopted that’s causing trouble. It was what he needed: a subject he mastered. Common “Look, sorry to get into your business, but…” he struck up a conversation with her, and within ten minutes they were talking about past relationships, hypochondria, and future careers. The conversation flowed so well and they got along so well that jokes like “wow, you are my soulmate” or “my God, we have to get married” were made a few times throughout the conversation. On the part of both.

He was going to help her find a home for the furry and troubled little Cupid and soon they also arranged a trip to the movies. He, on vacation, and she, full of commitments. It took four days for them to meet, but in the meantime they spoke to each other daily by text. In addition to being absurdly beautiful and charming, she was smart, funny, humorous and affectionate. For four days, at least sixty-four times a day, he worried that she only wanted her friendship. Until that fear came true. During one of the exchanges of messages, she said: “It’s good to be clear in our sincericide that the only thing I would like you to expect to receive in return is my friendship, see?!”. It was that left hook you take and you don’t even know where it came from, you just remember suddenly waking up on the floor.

It was more than a bucket of cold water, it was a bucket of warm water in the summer of Rio de Janeiro. He was already starting to remove the field team and resign himself to just being friends, but even so, he kept the plan to take the dog to the shelter and then go to the movies. Dog delivered, went to the movies. He brought up the subject and she, charming and sincere that only she, calmly said that she was not in a phase of relating to anyone etc etc etc, for a long time she kept this speech. Until he let the matter drop and accepted.

But this is where the Gods of romantic comedies came into play:during dinner, before the cinema, they talked for hours, on the most diverse subjects. And he suspected that she was getting closer, seemed more interested. But after what she said, he didn’t even dare think that meant anything. They finished dinner and went to the movies. There, he, in a burst of courage, confided that he wanted to kiss her. 3 times. She refused. But he could see that she refused hesitantly, without conviction. Until, during the movie, he kissed her and she kissed him back. For a few moments there was no film or people around. They kissed with desire and affection for long minutes. The girl who an hour ago didn’t want to be in a relationship with anyone, now she moved his hair affectionately as she kissed him.

They left the movie theater and his fear that it would end up inside the movie theater didn’t materialize: they walked hugging each other, kissed on the escalator, before getting into the car and all the way back. With the right to cafuné and holding hands. She remains reticent and averse to relationships and trying to control the future: “Tomorrow we’re going to take pictures in the woods but we’re not going to be a couple, okay”, she decreed, seconds before giving him a long, affectionate kiss and a tight hug. He commented that he would write about their romantic comedy and she seems to have liked the idea, as she made several suggestions, a succession of “when you write about us…”. And he promised to write. And he wrote. But not a couple.
