Each letter becomes part of our days and is an ingredient that cannot be missing from our lives. With the great diversity of genres and musical tastes, each person ends up identifying and having their favorite songs. Jacob Jolij, a neuroscientist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, determined which topic causes listeners the most happiness. At the end of the post, you’ll find a bonus with the top 10 songs that inevitably lift your spirits.

O awesome.club shares with you the information that this scientist discovered about the music that fills us with energy, thanks to its combination of rhythm and melody.

The science

A study conducted by the University of Missouri had people listen to “upbeat” music over two weeks and concluded that listening to music, without a clear genre in mind, tends to make people happier. On the other hand, Jacob Jolij created a formula for happy songs, studying 126 songs over a period of 50 years. So he took responses from a survey conducted by British electronics company Alba, in which Brits selected which songs made them feel the best, and examined the ones that got the highest scores. He checked the beats per minute, pitch and theme and analyzed the lyrics.

Upon analysis, he determined that positive lyrics, with a tempo of 150 beats per second, are the perfect combination for people to unconsciously feel more energetic, and by adding a third note to the music, sounds are produced that cause happiness. “A song that makes you feel good is very personal, it is strongly related to memory and emotion. These associations determine whether a song will make you feel good or not. However, there are some criteria considered by songwriters at the moment to create a happy song.”
commented Jolij.
