Already little, Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski he had preferences (and priorities) different from his classmates at school. The girl learned to fly a plane before he even learned to drive, and, fascinated by this machine, spent a good part of her youth assembling and disassembling planes to learn how to make one. Her intention was, later, to be able to build her own aircraft.

The idea arose after, as she herself tells the American newspaper Chicago Tribune, she told a high school teacher that she had flown an airplane. “That’s really cool”, he replied, “But what have you been up to lately?”.

The young woman reveals that, in addition to pushing her to build her own plane, this sentence has been a kind of mantra for her life ever since.

“That’s really cool, but what have you been up to lately?”

In addition to extracurricular creations, Sabrina also did very well at school – so much so that she attended a specific institution for gifted children in Chicago, her hometown in the United States.

It was in this city that the young woman cultivated her love for the skies – something that, even before she knew about airplanes, was present in her childhood dream: far beyond who answers “astronaut” to the question “what do you want to be when you grow up ?”, what she claimed to want was to “take people to Mars”🇧🇷 Sabrina says that being in heaven is fascinating. “It’s a nice feeling. It makes you see from a different perspective; everything gets so smaller,” she further reveals to the Chicago Tribune.

Between Harvard and MIT

Called by her teachers “the new Einstein”, today it is hard to believe that the young woman was initially rejected from school. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), having been on the waiting list. She was later accepted, however, and was the first woman in decades to graduate at the top of her class at the institute.

She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Harvard, another place she was rejected before graduation. Her research involves complex topics within physics: black holes and the nature of gravity and spacetime. Modest, she claims she still has to learn and do many things before going out giving interviews around. The high school teacher’s phrase, apparently, still echoes in her head.
