Farmers are usually prepared for many things, but a green puppy is not one of them. Italian sheep farmer Cristian Mallocci had no idea he would make headlines in the world’s biggest newspapers. On his farm on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, his dog Spelacchia gave birth to five puppies. Pistacchio’s four brothers and sisters had white fur, the same color as their mother, but the protagonist of today’s story showed what he came from and decided that his color would be green.
It is unusual for a dog to be born with green fur.
The story sounds strange, but it has a pretty simple explanation. Experts claim that this happens when light-furred puppies come into contact with a green pigment called biliverdin while still in their mother’s womb. This is the same substance responsible for the green color of bruises.
But don’t worry, the green fur won’t last forever. Pistacchio pigment is fading day by day. According to Mallocci, the veterinarian explained that during pregnancy, biliverdin, a substance contained in bile, mixes with the amniotic fluid of the placenta and can “stain” the puppy that has light hair.

In January 2020 a white German Shepherd gave birth to a greenish puppy in North Carolina; he was given the name Hulk. In 2017, there was a similar case in Scotland with a golden retriever.
Mallocci said he will keep Pistacchio on the farm so he can take care of the sheep
The farmer said that Pistacchio’s brothers and sisters will go to other houses, but he will stay on the farm to help his mother, Spelacchia, look after the flock of sheep. Mallocci also said that he was an unexpected gift, and as the color green is a sign of hope and luck, he probably came into the world with a beautiful purpose: to make people smile more.
