14+ People who understand well when someone says that living in an apartment building can be a daily challenge

Many people have the famous dream of owning their own home or just can’t wait to leave their parents’ house and find independence. Some of them want to live in an apartment because it is safer, smaller and easier to clean. What these people might not imagine is the amount of daily problems that life in a building can bring. Only those who lived know and, fortunately, tell how it was.

O awesome.club collected reports left on social networks about what it’s like to live surrounded by neighbors on all sides, including upstairs and downstairs, and the bullshit they’ve experienced in their buildings.

I lived on the 1st floor and had a tile under my bedroom window. The upstairs neighbors were extremely pigs, they even threw dirty toilet paper. My grandmother went to wash the tile using a pot of ice cream, and soon I heard her arguing with someone. When I got to the room, the neighbor on the floor from above I was saying that my grandmother had wet her room. Mocky that I am, I asked if the gravity was defective. I was laughing at her face for the nonsense she said. Until I left there, every time someone turned on the faucet, shower or anything with water in the house, I would ask if gravity was working, because otherwise it would wet the apartment above. A downstairs neighbor annoyed me several times by saying that the water from the clothes I was washing and from my shower would go down “through the wall” and flood her bathroom 🤔. I went there, she and I looked at the walls… they were intact! Sequinhas! But she still said that the water from my apartment was wetting her walls. The maintenance guy went there and discovered that it was the toilet valve. her, which got stuck and flooded the bathroom! © Roberta Judar Teles / Facebook
My upstairs neighbor, who is a woman in her 40s and 50s, doesn’t like me for some mysterious reason. The walls in our building are so thin that you can hear virtually everything being said. Lately I’ve been hearing her screaming and trash-talking me through my apartment ceiling. It’s getting annoying and I think she does it on purpose because she knows I can hear her. For example, one night I was on the phone talking to a girl and flirting with her and the next day I heard her making fun of me about our conversation. Here’s another example: I currently don’t have a car, as I’m saving up for one (I’m young and live with my mom). I left the house to walk to work and saw her in her car pointing at me and laughing at me. I’ve never spoken to her before in my life, but we’ve been neighbors since I was a kid. I don’t understand why she is like that. Normally I wouldn’t care what she thinks, but it’s starting to get annoying hearing her talking about me all the time. © MindlessTrendSetter / Reddit
We have problems with our neighbors upstairs. They drag furniture, knock things on the floor, even at dawn. One night, it was 8:40 pm and the blessed one turned on the drill. Several neighbors complained by shouting from the balcony, and we complained to the landlord. Then the neighbor requested a meeting with the manager and my husband, saying that he hadn’t done it and that we were boring, because drilling noise doesn’t bother us. The man even said that if it was his neighbor, he wouldn’t complain, because 20:40 is not late. © Arícia Cenedeze / Facebook
I lived on the 4th floor at one time and when we walked inside the house the neighbor would poke at his ceiling with his broom, even when we were barefoot. They began to do this until dawn. So, when I left at 4:30 in the morning for work, I turned on the six pack which made a lot of noise. It was like that until I moved. © Maria Lara / Facebook
I rented an apartment on the 2nd floor. Below me lived two elderly women. Every day, before 10 pm, I had to give my 2-year-old son milk and put it in the crib right away, because the ladies would wait for that time to start poking the ceiling with a broomstick. I respected him, but he was unbearably intolerant. I think she was even sad that I put him in the crib, because it ended her fun, which was making my life hell. The boy couldn’t drop a cap on the floor. When I came to buy my new apartment, I told the realtor “if it’s not on the ground floor, don’t even show me”. Thank God my upstairs neighbor is a sweetheart. It has its mishaps that every condominium has, but I feel safe. I respect my limits and that of others. My upstairs neighbors seem to spend the night playing biloca (marbles) on the floor because the noise is the same. I didn’t complain, I just told them that, when they were playing, they should invite me to play too. After all, I liked it a lot and I have a lot of bilocas saved, which is true. After that day, the noises stopped. © Ricardo Alves Belo / Facebook
My former neighbor had a piano that was leaning against the wall in my living room. And the walls were so thin that when he played, it was like a recital in my own house. There was just one problem: he loved to play the piano, but he only knew how to play one song. So for about 18 years I listened to the same song every day — at least 3 times a day. To this day, I get chills if I listen to that song under any other circumstances.
Before I separated from my child’s father, we lived in an apartment building with very noisy people. Most did not respect the condominium rules, making noise even during quiet hours and we, who lived on the ground floor, heard everything. To make matters worse, my newborn son slept little and so did we, so the noise from upstairs neighbors bothered us even more. We sent a complaint to the building group and no one came forward to resolve it, we even made a written complaint to the superintendent and nothing! One day I went out for a walk with my son to calm him down and his father took advantage of our absence to put an end to it once and for all. He went to the front door of the apartment, opened and closed it with force about ten times, making a noise that echoed through all the floors. Immediately, everyone went to the group to ask scared where the noise was coming from. When I arrived, my son’s father was laughing with satisfaction at having made the neighbors try their own medicine.
As soon as I moved into my apartment, the manager came to introduce herself and ask me to avoid making noise after 8 pm, as her husband sleeps early — she lives in the apartment below mine. After that, I noticed that every time someone made excessive noise, she was the first to stand out in the building group. Until I started hearing a hammering noise, after 10 pm, for three days straight, but she didn’t complain even once. It was so loud that I recorded an audio and it sounded like it was indoors. I sent this recording to the group, asking who it was, and no one responded. I, who am a “Sheroque Holmes”, tried to stick my head out the window and managed to see who? The landlord’s husband hammering a piece of furniture in the room, right below mine. Well, I went to her apartment and knocked on the door, but she didn’t answer! I sent an audio, this time directly to her, saying: “Very funny, the lady, who complains about everyone but when it’s with her husband, Patrícia does it!”.

Bonus: Sometimes you yourself end up being the clueless neighbor

On another occasion, I was the clueless neighbor. This happened the first few weeks I lived in the apartment. I went to wash the dishes, turned on the faucet and noticed that there was no water. I asked the landlord and she informed me that the condominium was temporarily without water because of the drought. Well, I left the dishes there and went to work. At 2:00 pm, I received a call from the landlord who was desperate because there was water coming out of my apartment and flooding the hallway. Turns out the water came back and I had forgotten the faucet turned on. With the sink full of dishes, the water overflowed, flooded the whole apartment and was already going down to the floors below too!
