If you’re on the team that loves Italian cuisine, you can be happy now! According to scientists, the idea that eating pasta will make you fat is a myth – in fact, the opposite is true. Despite being high in carbohydrates, pasta can even help you lose weight, according to findings from a new study. When consumed as part of a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables and olive oil, pasta is linked to a slight reduction in Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist size.

The study, carried out by Italian scientists, analyzed the diets of more than 23,000 people from two different areas of Italy. They asked participants to write down everything they ate during the day and then be asked about their diets by telephone interviewers. The amount of pasta they consumed daily was standardized and compared with their BMI, waist and hip measurements.

The researchers concluded that there is no link between eating pasta and gaining weight – in fact, the habit was linked to weight loss. Data showed that consuming pasta according to individual needs contributes to a healthy body mass index, smaller waist circumference and better waist-to-hip ratio. Licia Iacoviello, from the Neuromed Institute in Pozzilli, Italy, who carried out the research, added: “The conclusion of this study is that if pasta is consumed in moderation and respecting the variety of foods (pasta in the first place), it is good for your health. health.” The researchers also found that those who ate pasta regularly were more likely to follow the traditional Mediterranean diet, eating mostly tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil, cheese and seasoned rice.
