Know if your child has a problem by the drawing he makes

Analyze your child’s drawings and understand what they mean

Pencil in hand, a child up to 12 years old lets his imagination run wild and reveals, through his drawings, what he doesn’t say with words but is in his heart. But how to identify in these traits signs of anguish, anger and sadness? “Parents should ask their children to draw, observe, ask questions, talk to them”, advises psychologist Andreia Calçada. And if the little one tells you something that bothers you, try to help him.

Analyze design and attitudes

Drawing should be seen as one more detail in the child’s behavior, and not in isolation. And only a professional can give the diagnosis. “Children with serious problems, such as family rejection or absence of a parent, end up drawing the family (uncle, grandfather, dog), less important figures (parents) and themselves”, says Andreia. If your child is already 10 years old, for example, and drawing people with chopsticks, without clothes or body parts, it might not be good. I should have made better defined strokes by now.

Doodles only until age 3!

If the child draws a perfect world (with neat features of a house, a complete family, smiling people…), it is very likely that he is receiving all the love and affection he needs. Now, notice if your child is drawing according to his age. The abstract doodle phase (the one that does not form any figure) lasts only up to 3 years. The colors will make sense at 6, 7 years old. Also pay attention to the family environment. What’s the weather at home? How is the life of the parents? Is he calm or does he see fights?

The strokes, colors and themes of the drawings can say a lot about your child’s emotions.

Possible meanings for typical drawings

The child puts on paper his emotional contents and the way he observes the world. Understand what it means:

Feature – Notice if your child’s trait is weak, almost invisible. It could be insecurity. Now, if he makes a very strong line, it can represent anguish.

How to act: Praise and encourage your child to express emotions (happiness, anger, sadness…).

Colors – Excessive red can be a sign that the child is suffering or seeing many scenes of violence. Black could be depression.

How to act: Realize if he is contradicted by any situation and talk to him.

Frequent topics – There are children who love fairy tales and animations, but even so, emotions can be identified in these drawings, such as excessive anger or revolt. And, if the little one only draws fights, it could also be due to the conflicts he experiences.

How to act: The ideal is to talk to his teacher, but it can be normal.

Drawing sexual organs on display can indicate possible abuse. Be alert!

Unreal Scenes – Drawing people flying, houses without roofs, people without heads and other situations out of reality is often a cause for attention. And the little ones who draw and erase several times are probably insecure and perfectionists.

How to act: Do not cover or criticize the child.

Body members – Forgetting legs and arms deserves attention. Arm is independence and leg, affectivity. If you always draw your sexual organs on display, it could be a problem, like abuse.

How to act: Seek professional help

How do I take advantage of the drawings?

If you want to find out if your child has an emotional problem, look at his drawings. If something is calling your attention, ask. If the little one didn’t draw his father, for example, ask why. Try to understand, until you change some behavior that saddens you (such as demanding too much, rejection, criticism). If you can’t, seek psychological help.
