It’s not enough to be close, you have to be close

Many believe that being close and being close are synonymous. They are wrong! There is a big difference between being close and being close to someone. Being close implies being geographically located, however the second is much more than just being next to someone.

Being close takes work, it takes us out of our comfort zone. It’s making yourself present, even when you’re not close. It’s giving up something important in favor of the good of the other. It’s valuing small actions just to please the ones you love. It’s worrying about the well being of the other, even before your own.

Becoming close demands spending resources in favor of the other, and this involves, in addition to money, time. It’s being available to give flowers or buy medicine. It’s planning a beautiful dinner or becoming a nurse for a day to take care of the other.

It takes work to be close

Being close is easy, it’s comfortable. When you’re just close by, you can be in the same room with the person for hours without even caring what they’re thinking. It’s calling her at the end of the day, just for convenience, and being embarrassed by the lack of topic and wanting to hang up.
