In times of crisis, create opportunities

Hello friends!

The first time I saw and heard that in crisis situations we should withdraw and create ($) I believe it was in one of Lair Ribeiro’s books. The image below makes it easier to visualize.

I’ve also heard that in Chinese there is only one word for crisis and opportunity. Ie, 危机 means both a moment of crisis and a critical moment of opportunity for change.

As I really enjoy studying economics – maybe this will be my next course – I began to see clearly that there is a very big difference between the mindset (mindset) of those who want to prosper, those who want to earn more and those who don’t care about it either you just want stability or you’re afraid to grow.

There are lots and lots of people who keep their money in savings or even under their mattress, while others learn about investing and earn hundreds of times more (in the long run). In times of crisis like these (in fact, since I was a child they say that Brazil and the world are in crisis), there is a big difference between those who view the scenario as a crisis scenario and an opportunity scenario.

Anyone who sees an opportunity in the crisis begins to realize that there is the possibility of buying shares, land, houses, businesses at a low price. After all, with high interest rates and a turbulent market, the tendency is for prices to fall, but in the long term the tendency is for them to rise again.

Well, since I’m not a super financial expert (yet), what I’d like to share with you today is less this financial aspect and more the psychological side of the outlook horizon.

Beliefs in times of crisis

Thinking not only about the financial aspect of a crisis, if we visualize the emotional aspect of a crisis situation in life, we will see that a crisis can really be an excellent opportunity to change.

Maybe we won’t get to see it right away. Perhaps only as months or even years pass will we see that it was the rise of a personal crisis that was the key to long-term positive change. It could be a breakup, losing a job, or breaking a leg.

Of course this can be seen as the Pollyana Syndrome (the most optimistic girl in literature in the world). However, it is an easily verifiable fact.

I often see people who have wealthy families settle into a situation and delay adolescence for decades. With the death of a parent or a major financial loss, the person then begins to move. A personal and/or financial crisis, then, ends up being the breaking point. The crisis truly generates an opportunity for growth.

At the red book by Jung, a book that should be considered a kind of self-analysis in the form of a novel with fantastic characters from the unconscious, the author encounters at a certain point the dead who come from Jerusalem and find no rest. Although at first much of the content resembles madness (Jung is aware of this), this example of the dead is useful to show that – in the Book – the dead have no rest because they have not accomplished what they had to accomplish.

It’s a little strange to think about it: “What if we die without accomplishing what we have to accomplish? What do we have to accomplish here? Are we doing it?”

Well, everyone must give their own answer, of course. But the crux of the argument is that as long as there is life, there is still life to be lived. And a crisis is just a moment that will be succeeded by another. Therefore, despite criticism from linguists that the Chinese word is polysemous, the Chinese must think of crisis and opportunity at the same time.

Because deep down the movement of destruction is part of the movement of creation. Destruens et construens. Destroy and build. Ending certain things in our lives can be terrible at the time, however, afterwards, the void gives way to new construction.

Conclusion

I know that for someone who is experiencing a profound crisis firsthand (in whatever area it may be) it can be difficult to create the necessary distance to evaluate it as a positive change. That is why psychotherapy so much helps the patient to find a new meaning in their experiences, because a true psychotherapy – whatever approach it may take – will provide the subject with the strength to face life, this succession of endless scenes that oscillate between pleasure and the pain.

Therefore, the aim of psychotherapy is never to lead to a state of static happiness, but rather to provide a new way of looking at things. Stop wanting things to be just nice and positive. Knowing how to deal with frustrations and difficulties. Knowing how to resignify, that is, to change the meanings…

And one way is to understand impermanence. An opportunity can create a crisis. A crisis creates an opportunity.
