In Jerusalem no one has been able to move this ladder for 300 years

But don’t get us wrong. From a physical point of view, anyone can move the ladder in the photo that illustrates this post. It is not super heavy nor is it attached to the base. None of that. However, if you move it, you’ll somehow trigger a real war. Because? Everything is due to human nature, religion and obstinacy.

O awesome.club explains why no one can move the ladder…

The ladder lies in front of the windows of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (or Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre) in Jerusalem, Israel. It is one of the holiest places in the world for Christians and was completed in the year 335. For this reason, the building rightfully belongs to 6 religious communities. And here all the confusion begins.

The different parts of the temple are under the command of the Catholic, Greek, Armenian, Syrian, Ethiopian and Coptic churches. In 1757, they all reached an agreement, which states that nothing in the church can be changed without the approval of the six religious orders. That treaty continues to operate to this day.

Thanks to the treaty, work cannot be carried out in the church, because the orders cannot reach a consensus when it comes to the final result, that is, which wall would be worth painting and which not, for example. The same goes for the ladder, which appeared there by chance when the agreement was signed. This object, like the furniture inside the temple, is not to be moved by anyone. Otherwise, a real religious war can begin.

Something similar happened in 2002. A monk was sitting on a chair on the roof of the building and he moved it in the shade, so as not to be under the scorching sun. As he did this without having permission from all six religious orders, he was declared a violator of the 1757 agreement. This started a real battle between the communities, which resulted in dozens of monks being injured.

But let’s go back to the stairs. It is believed that a mason was repairing the window and simply forgot the object there. No one knew his name and, more importantly, what religion he belonged to. Since then, the six religious orders have not touched the ladder because they believe it belongs to everyone.

Despite everything, the ladder was moved a few times. In 1981, a prankster tried to move it, but was immediately detained by the police. The second time this happened, an unknown person took the object and disappeared with it for two weeks. During this period, a war was almost unleashed, panic took hold of people and everyone was suspicious of those around him. Luckily, the man soon returned the ladder. A couple of times orders agreed to move it, but only to sweep the floor.

And so the old wooden staircase, left in place by an unknown person, is expected to remain there for a few more centuries.
