7 Vintage Celebrity Wedding Dresses So Elegant We’d Still Wear Them Today

It is not easy to choose a special wedding dress. If you can’t find your dream style in trendy magazines, try taking a look at some vintage celebrity photos. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Priscilla Presley and many other famous people of yesteryear wore wedding dresses so stylish and beautiful that they continued to inspire brides the world over for decades to come.

We, from awesome.club, we believe these seven vintage wedding dresses worn by celebrities are totally worth recreating and wearing by today’s brides. That’s because these models are too elegant and chic to be forgotten.

Princess Diana, 1981

Princess Diana’s wedding dress is one of the most iconic in history. It was made of ivory silk taffeta and antique lace and richly decorated with hand-embroidered sequins and pearls. This wedding dress also had several hidden surprises. There was, for example, a golden horseshoe sewn into the petticoat as a symbol of good luck, and a square of lace belonging to Queen Mary was attached to the dress. The stylists, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, also sewed a small blue bow around the waist, in order to bring luck to the bride.

Diana’s wedding dress, which looked like a fluffy meringue from afar, became an inspiration for many brides shortly after the royal wedding and remained an icon in the wedding fashion industry for years to come. Brides across the world wanted to wear dresses made from similar fabrics, with puffed sleeves and long skirts. In 2021, Diana’s wedding dress was displayed at Kensington Palace.

Priscilla Presley, 1967

On the day she married the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, Priscilla wore an unpretentious, long, white dress with a see-through part on the blouse and sleeves decorated with pearls. The dress had a very simple yet elegant look, and Priscilla actually bought it ready, instead of asking a famous designer to make a model for her.

Later, Priscilla confessed to going undercover to buy her wedding dress. She wore a blonde wig and a fake name to keep the matter private. She only had one fitting fitting of that dress before she bought it. It seems to have been love at first sight.

Audrey Hepburn, 1952

This wedding dress never made it down the aisle, but it’s so beautiful, we think it should make the list. Audrey Hepburn commissioned this ivory model with long sleeves and a bow at the waist from the Fontana sisters, based in Rome, Italy. At the time, the actress was preparing to marry British businessman James Hanson. They called off the wedding and Audrey never actually wore this beautiful dress as a bride, but there is a photo of her during a fitting.

The actress asked the stylists to donate the dress to a bride who couldn’t afford such a luxurious model, and it ended up being worn by an Italian woman named Amiable Altobella on her wedding day. She later said the dress “brought her luck” and she was happily married. In 2009, the dress was sold at auction.

Princess Margaret, 1960

Here is another royal wedding dress belonging to the list of the most iconic wedding outfits. On May 6, 1960, Princess Margaret married British photographer and filmmaker Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones. For the occasion, she chose a long organza and silk dress designed by Norman Hartnell.

There were few crystal ornaments and decorations and the model highlighted the small silhouette of Princess Margaret. Although this piece may seem too simple for a royal wedding dress, it is a beautiful example of a simple and minimalist dress, capable of putting the woman wearing it in the center of attention.

Elizabeth Taylor, 1950

Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times and this dress was worn in her first marriage, to Conrad Hilton, the heir to the Hilton Hotel chain. This classic model, created by costume designer Helen Rose and funded by MGM, certainly conveyed some “real” vibes with its voluminous skirt, its classic cut and its pearl ornaments.

This was the only “traditional” wedding dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor. For subsequent weddings, she chose quirky designs, such as a dark green hooded one, a knee-length yellow chiffon one, and even a cashmere coat.

Jacqueline Kennedy, 1953

The dress worn by Jacqueline Bouvier at her wedding to John F. Kennedy was created by African-American fashion designer Ann Lowe. The design was crafted from taffeta and ivory silk and featured a lovely curved neckline and a full, voluminous skirt. It is interesting to know that the original wedding dress designed by Lowe almost got lost. The designer’s workshop suffered a flood and the original wedding dress and nine other dresses created for that wedding were ruined. But Lowe and his team spent eight days rebuilding the models and managed to complete everything in time.

Although the piece was appreciated by a wide audience, Jacqueline herself later confessed that she did not like some details. For example, she thought that the neckline didn’t suit her appearance and that the skirt looked like “a lampshade”.

Grace Kelly, 1956

This is probably one of the most remembered and best known wedding dresses of all time. The dress worn by Grace Kelly at her wedding to Prince Rainier III of Monaco was created by Helen Rose, an MGM costume designer. The model had a fitted lace bodice with a high collar and a tulip-shaped skirt. Elegant and sophisticated, he was the personification of dignity and style.
