How to choose baby room color

Pregnancy is a magical moment in the life of a woman who, along with other family members, happily awaits the birth of a new family member! It’s also a busy period of preparation, decisions and even some indecisions – after all, future dads need to get everything ready for the baby’s arrival!

Exactly for this reason, it is common for doubts to arise, ranging from choosing the child’s name, going through the purchase of the layette, to choosing the color of the baby’s room!

This last question, by the way, is quite important, since – although some people don’t know it or don’t value it – each color has a meaning and says a lot about the mother’s personality and her desires in relation to the baby.

Below, Aline Mendes, architect and Master in Feng Shui, explains what is important to consider when choosing a baby’s room color, as well as the meanings of the main colors in Feng Shui analysis.

The importance of colors

According to Aline Mendes, colors are vibratory frequencies, and different wavelengths are captured by our eyes in different ways. “In this way, each color will also have a different influence on our body and our emotions, according to its frequency”, she says.

Also according to the professional, stronger colors have a more intense influence, while softer pastel tones have a more subtle influence. “Babies are very sensitive to everything going on in their environment, and bright colors can over-stimulate their still-developing neurological system. Therefore, it is best to give preference to soft colors in the baby’s room. Of course, we can have colorful objects decorating the room, but the walls, curtains and bedspreads must have light colors”, highlights Aline.

According to Feng Shui, we must follow the harmony of nature’s tones, making the floor have a darker tone than the walls, and the ceiling lighter than them. “Walls that are darker than the floor, or ceilings that are darker than the walls, generate an imbalance in the dynamics of yin (female principle) and yang (male principle) energies”, explains the professional.

Colors, the mother’s personality and desires

Aline Mendes highlights that the warm tones are more connected to the telluric energies (of the Earth), they are stimulating and also welcoming. “So a mother who is looking for joy and movement in her life will tend to prefer these tones. Cold colors are linked to cosmic energies, they are calming and refreshing. A mother who is looking for tranquility, peace, will likely have sympathy for these colors,” she says.

But you have to be aware of excesses, which can generate unwanted effects. “A room with too much warm colors can make the baby restless, and lead to problems like insomnia or colic. A room with excessively cold colors can lead to apathy and depression, weakening the immune system. Therefore, the ideal is to have a balance of warm and cold colors in the baby’s room”, explains the architect and master in Feng Shui.

Colors meaning

blue x pink

In the past, the color blue was directly associated with boys, and the color pink with girls. This was true for choosing the color of the room, the details of the decoration, as well as the color of the baby’s clothes. But does this idea still exist today? Or are mothers free to choose their favorite colors?

Aline Mendes explains that, almost all over the world, yang-masculine attitudes are more valued, such as action, impulsiveness, initiative and the predominance of the rational mind. “The yin-feminine qualities are not valued as much, such as receptivity, softness, acceptance and dominance of feelings. These traits are often taken for weakness. Therefore, it is not surprising that girls can even wear the color blue, considered masculine, but it is still not normally accepted that boys wear the color pink, considered feminine. We can see this differentiation in the clothes and toys available on the market”, she highlights.

The professional adds that we cannot ignore that there are physiological, emotional, cognitive and behavioral differences between boys and girls. “In general, boys are more agitated and, therefore, the calming blue color is good for them. Likewise, girls are generally more relaxed, and a nurturing pink color is appropriate. But these are generalizations, we know that there are agitated girls and calm boys. The choice of color for the decoration of the room must, therefore, respect the individual characteristics of the child and the family”, concludes Aline Mendes.

Now you know that colors have an important influence on an environment and you have good tips to help you choose the color of your baby’s room. After all, it is essential that this becomes a pleasant space to host special family moments!
