How to behave at a company party

Even if it’s a year-end or company birthday party, even if you know everyone, the famous “company party” it is still a work-related situation. And you’ll meet all those people again the next day. So, see how to behave and avoid problems:

🇧🇷 Do not take or ask to take a husband, boyfriend or relatives if the invitation is just for you.

🇧🇷 Leave extravagant clothes, large necklines and lots of makeup for strictly social situations.

🇧🇷 Avoid talking about work-related matters all the time.

🇧🇷 Only carry the camera if the meeting is a barbecue or a very informal lunch. If it’s a reception, no way.

🇧🇷 If a colleague becomes inconvenient, try to remove him from the group discreetly. The next day, at the office, no mention of the embarrassment with the others.

Time to greet the boss

When he is in a circle of outsiders or members of the board, an opportunity to greet him informally is expected. No need to reach out. Just nod your head and say ‘How are you?’, perhaps starting a conversation. If the boss and the woman – or the husband – are at the entrance, talk to them when you arrive. It is only necessary to say goodbye if the party is at his house.

Did your acquaintance drink a little too much?

If a boring person doesn’t let go and you’re already tired, start a conversation with other colleagues and ignore him. It will seem like a lapse, not rudeness.

Exchanging cards with employees with whom we have no contact

If forced, it will have the opposite effect to what you want. It is best, when leaving, to offer your card only if someone shows interest in a new contact. Among people of different hierarchical levels, the initiative comes from the superior. At a cocktail party, you never give your card to anyone eating or drinking. Cards are not exchanged at the table.

In the presence of a foreigner

If he doesn’t speak Portuguese, you should try to converse in his language and translate for other Brazilians who don’t understand the other language. That way everyone can join the conversation.
