How is training with the SKillMill motorless treadmill –

Technogym’s SkillMill treadmill is quite different from the conventional machines you’re used to running on. To begin with, it does not have an engine, that is, the speed depends on the impulse and the strength of who is on top of it. “This makes the movement more similar to that of street running”, explains Fabio Ferreira, a professor at the Bio Ritmo Morumbi Town gym, in São Paulo, who launched an exclusive workout with the equipment.

Thanks to the unique features of the SkillMill – in addition to the absence of a motor, it has a concave surface, nine levels of resistance and two traction straps – it is possible to create many possibilities for exercises beyond traditional running. You can pretend to pull a sled, do lateral shifts or do small jumps (see the day below).

“We focus on improving the power, strength and agility of the legs while accelerating the metabolism”, says Fabio. You can burn up to 500 calories in 45 minutes.

To complete the training work, students go through two other functional stations: one with dumbbells and kettlebells, and one with a box. “Despite the physical demand being great, I don’t feel mentally exhausted because the sequences are very dynamic”, reports Rosa Marão, who has been attending the class for four months. “When you think you won’t be able to carry on, there’s time to breathe and keep going for the next exercise”, completes Paola Monezi de Barros, who also joined the novelty.

The scheme is like this: there are four HIIT blocks with nine exercises – 30 seconds of activity and 30 of rest. Positive point for those who don’t enjoy running so much, since the passage through the treadmill is very fast. “Even so, you can improve your physical condition by training three times a week”, guarantees Fabio.

BF went to the limit

“At first, it felt like I was going to fall off the SkillMill because the surface moved quickly – the longer the stride and the higher up you step, the faster the spin. I reached 14.5 km/h (on a traditional treadmill I don’t exceed 13 km/h) in a very natural way, since I was pushing the ballast myself. I confess that I didn’t have as much coordination when it came to lateral lunges (I need to practice more!), but I loved the exercise where I increased the resistance of the SkillMill and pulled the traction straps into a squat [veja no vídeo abaixo].

The functional training had burpees, shoulder development, switchblade abdominals and box jumps. The idea is to do as many repetitions as possible in 30 seconds to maintain the HIIT style of the workout (I burned 388 calories). Therefore, I used lighter weights in the exercises – with no focus on hypertrophy. I agree with my sweaty partners: there’s no time to feel mentally exhausted thanks to the dynamism of the sequences. Only my little body left Bio Ritmo with that feeling of accomplishment, which is great!” – Daniela Bernardi, fitness editor.
