You’ll probably remember that we recently published a list of six song lyrics that don’t make sense. Because the success of this post was so great and the comments from readers were so valuable that we decided to continue: why not make a second batch of these lyrics that we love, but don’t make sense?
O awesome.club took a dive into the depths of Brazilian music to find ten more songs with these lyrics full of, um… creativity. And here they are, for you to sing along if you like. And for us to laugh. After all, it’s all a big joke.
‘Parabolic’ – Engineers from Hawaii
Hold my satellite dish / Little Princess Skylight / Parallels that intersect / In Belém do Pará
The 1992 song is a tribute by Humberto Gessinger, leader of the band from Rio Grande do Sul, to his daughter. The trick is to understand the logic of the lyrics that say “Look similar, Paraguayan / Lightning rod on a sunny day /
For me”. Supposedly the lyrics explain that even though they are far away from Clara, they will always be connected. Be creative 🙂
‘Natasha’ – Initial Capital
Car tires sing / Tchuru, tchuru, tchuru, tchururu
The lyrics of this song from 2000, which was a huge success on “Acústico MTV”, are actually quite simple to understand. Ana Paula became Natasha, we understand. What really complicates it is the chorus. After all, what car tire is this that sings Thuru, thuru, thuru, thururu? Dinho Ouro Preto and his bandmates never told us what kind of rubber the tire was.
‘Beautiful Youth’ – 14 Bis
Zabelê, Zumbi, beetle / Vespa making honey / I keep your treasure / Brown jewel
And how about this beautiful song from 1982 by the band from Minas Gerais that had a handful of hits, but some of them not exactly easy to understand. Further on, the song reads “Wonder, youth / Poor me, poor us / Milky Way, shine for us / Little lives on the corner”.
‘Knight of Aruanda’ – Ronnie Von
Who is this glorious and warrior cacique / He comes riding his horse / Descends in my yard
Perhaps you only know Ronnie Von as the always impeccably groomed and friendly TV presenter. But a long time ago he had a musical career that went not only through the times of Jovem Guarda, but also through an incredible experimental rock and psychedelic phase that also approached umbanda and made what became a classic of terreiros across the country.
‘On the Road’ – Marisa Monte
Room, without it, has a window / I lean towards attention
She is a critical and public success, but even figures like Marisa Monte have the right to sing some things that are a bit complicated to understand from time to time. Does the room only have a window without it? Does the window disappear with her? The composition of Marisa, Nando Reis and Carlinhos Brown needs an explanation that possibly can only come from one of the three.
‘Reliquary’ – Nando Reis
The islands dance over the sea / What color A is your booklet?
Former Titã Nando Reis is also an ace in putting mysterious passages in his songs. In one of his best known songs, there are some of the most mysterious verses. He also sings ““And there are two eyelashes in mid-air / Behind the son comes the father and grandfather / Like a trigger without firing / That invades yet another place / Where I won’t go”.
‘Chalk Floor’ – Zé Ramalho
I fire cannonballs / It’s useless because there is / A Grand Vizier
Zé Ramalho’s ideas and way of singing and composing have something very similar to Bob Dylan. And “Chão de Giz”, one of his classics, manages to hypnotize even with verses of understanding beyond complex, like the American colleague. In the end, it’s about the good (?) and old heartbreak: the 1978 song is about a love failure. Freud explains, as he sings in the song.
‘Guzzy Muzzy’ – Jorge Mautner
Did you drink it / Cachaça with chayote / Can’t answer / Guzzy guzzy muzzy
The talent of the singer and composer from Rio de Janeiro is undeniable. But we still need a tutorial to understand the lyrics of this 1974 song. Mautner, who has already had compositions recorded by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, even tries an explanation in the last verses: “Guzzy means that I love you / And muzzy means that I adore you”. Still, we continue without understanding.
‘Modern Fair’ – Beto Guedes
Modern fair, the sensual invitation / Oh, telephone operator, the word is dead
Every song is entitled to a certain level of subjectivity, but Beto Guedes seems to have abused it a bit in this 1978 song, from the album Amor de Índio. Clube da Esquina, the ultimate symbol of music in the state, should be proud of the complexity of these verses.
‘I devour you’ – Djavan
On another plane / I would devour you like Caetano / Leonardo DiCaprio / It’s a miracle
Ah, of course we couldn’t end this series of lyrics, let’s say, complex, without Djavan, a master of complexity full of talent. After talking about “Açaí”, this time we chose a newer one: “Eu te Devoro”, from 1998, which quotes Caetano Veloso, Leonardo Di Caprio and talks about the Milky Way and Dinosaurs.
After this new second batch of lyrics, do you remember more well-known songs that don’t make much sense? Tell us, leave your comment.
