Granolas have a lot of sugar and wrong information on the label, says Proteste –

good accompaniment to fruitsyoghurts and other foods, the granola It is loved by many people who follow a healthy diet. But can all options on the market be considered beneficial to health?

In a survey released this Monday (7), Proteste – Brazilian Association for Consumer Protection analyzed eight brands of granola. According to the results, three of them – Kellogg’s, Vitalin and Kobber – have a high content of sugar in their formulas. As there is no specific legislation for total sugars in Brazil, the test methodology considered as a parameter the daily intake recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), a maximum of 50 g per day.

The research shows that, when ingesting a single portion (40g) of Kellogg’s granola (which received the worst evaluation), the consumer ingests 12 g of total sugars, which is equivalent to 24% of that indicated by WHO (World Health Organization) per day. In Vitalin and Kobber products, the percentage reaches 21%.

If the amount of sugar is not specified in the nutritional tablethe tip is to check the list of ingredients on the packaging – those that appear at the beginning are those that are present in greater quantities.

Keeping an eye on the label

Proteste also compared the nutritional information printed on the labels with the contents of the products. According to Anvisa, the variation between what is written on the package and what is actually in the formula can be a maximum of 20% per serving. This criterion was not respected by the brands Vitalin, Qualitá and Kobber. The first brings less fat (-52%) and less sodium than promised (-23%); the second, more fiber (47%) and less sodium (-57%); and the third, more fiber (27%) and less fat (-33%) and sodium (-46%) in relation to what is printed on the package. Granatus, on the other hand, had less sodium than reported (-51%).

And the sodium?

None of the brands had more sodium than allowed by law. Mãe Terra, however, says on its packaging that it contains 0 mg of the mineral per portion, but in the evaluated product 9 mg were found. According to Anvisa, the nutritional information for sodium can only be considered “zero” when the food contains less than or equal to 5 mg per serving.
