For this couple, “senior age” is synonymous with adventure, traveling the world on a motorcycle

Dropping everything and traveling the world is not a very uncommon dream, but few have the audacity to actually put the plan into practice. Behold, a couple decides that it is never too late to dream, or even to make such a dream come true.

Serafim Fernandéz and Shirley Elena, a Uruguayan couple who have lived in Maranhão for 40 years, decided to have a different retirement plan. They dropped everything to live the big dream. Baptizing their project “My Big Dream”, they began their adventure to travel the world on two wheels.

Both have degrees in business management, tourism and hospitality, having always worked in this area. They never had children, nor did they accumulate wealth. It was then that, after the age of 70, they decided to sell all their furniture and invest in a motorcycle to set out on a journey around the world with no strings attached and no end date.

In a television interview, Mr. Serafim said, with his slight Uruguayan accent: “I feel free for the first time. That’s the truth. Because we were always taking care of others, doing service for others, ensuring the quality of the service, that everything had to be right, straight and everything. Not today. Today we continue to do things right, but for us and spontaneously. If we need to stop anywhere, we stop, we rest. If we have to sleep, we sleep. We have no date, time, we have nothing. We’re just walking.”

The plan is to accumulate experience first getting to know all the capitals of the Brazilian states, driving two to three hundred kilometers a day, without rushing. They made a point of taking almost nothing. On the motorcycle, only what is necessary for the trip.

Dona Shirley said: “We are living in an intense and different way than what we had lived and now we have freed ourselves. We are completely free. And our home is now the motorcycle. For us it’s been fantastic”.

And, aware that advanced age becomes a differential in the impact of the story, the two have a beautiful video message in response.

In January, the couple earned just over 24,000 reais by participating in the painting “The Wall”, on the program by presenter Luciano Huck. Money needed to finance the continuation of the trip. Shirley says that they plan to go to Alaska, visiting all the countries of America, and from there they will take a ship and go to China, Europe and the rest of Asia.

At the beginning of June they completed two years of journey. They have already faced setbacks, such as a fracture in Shirley’s right femur, which had to be treated while passing through Rio de Janeiro. But nothing discourages this incredible couple from continuing to live their big dream.
