The term Baguá (or Ba Gua) means, in literal translation, eight trigrams. And the trigrams are formed by a set of three lines that can be continuous, representing Yang (male) energy, or broken, symbolizing Yin (female) energy, or combined with each other.

The book of Changes, known as the I Ching, talks about the possible combinations of the trigrams and their important meanings. The trigrams are drawn on each of the Guas of the Baguá. Therefore, we have two different types of Bagua – the one from the Previous Heaven and the one from the Later Heaven, which we will explain in a moment.

Feng Shui: How to Apply Bagua

Follow this step by step to identify where each Guá is in your home or work:

Draw or print the floor plan of your house or your room or a square or rectangular room in your house. Locate in the drawing the line of the wall of the main entrance door of the house or room and keep this part of the drawing horizontal. With the help of a ruler, check how much this line measures horizontally and divide that measurement into 3 equal parts and mark the plan with stronger points or a different color. Locate the line of the side wall vertically on the plan on the drawing and calculate the measurement considering the horizontal base of the entrance door as the beginning of the measurement. Divide this vertical measurement (side of the plan) into 3 equal parts by marking the plan with stronger dots or a different color. Do the same on the top part of the plant (at the top opposite the line of the entrance door) and on the two sides, vertical lines of the plant. Now connect the dots or dashes and up to 9 equal squares or rectangles. To find out if you have correctly applied the Baguá Map, the entrance door to the house or property will be in one of the following Guás: work, friends or wisdom.

Previous Sky Bagua

Legend has it that the designs of the trigrams were drawn on the shell of a turtle and represent the primordial order of the universe and the moment that precedes material existence. According to Feng Shui, this is the Right baguá to use in the entrance door, that is, used outside the home, as a protective talisman. It is often found in mirrors that have the same function, but check the design of the trigrams to make sure it is the Bagua of the Previous Heaven. only the Previous Sky Bagua can be used outside and outside of the house or property, above the main entrance door or a gate. The Bagua of the Later Heaven is also composed of the trigrams with the yin and yang lines, however, the lines are in very different positions, representing the connection of the phenomena of nature with men, science, geography and life on earth, or that is, the existence, the concrete, the materialization. This is the Baguá from Escola do Chapéu Negro used on the floor plan of the property to identify the Guás of Baguá. This kind of Bagua can be used indoors as a symbol of good luck and for harmonization and activation of good energies. Objects, paintings, images, accessories, utensils, furniture with an octagonal shape (it does not need to have the lines of the trigrams) are welcome and bring luck to the decoration of the house.
