Erythritol: what it is and benefits

Erythritol is a low-calorie natural sweetener taken from some fruits and vegetables.

Because it has a low glycemic index, its consumption is considered safe even for people with diabetes, who need to adhere to a low-sugar diet.

“That means it doesn’t cause a big spike in blood sugar levels after consumption. Therefore, it becomes a healthy alternative to regular sugar,” says the professional.

“In addition, the small intestine absorbs its molecules quickly and eliminates them through the urine. With that, so it doesn’t cause side effects, like gastrointestinal discomfort or diarrhea, common with other polios”, she adds.

Among natural sweetener options, erythritol is one of the least caloric, having less than 95% of the calories of common sugar.

“This makes it a healthy alternative to replace common sugar in a balanced diet”, says Vanessa.

How to use erythritol?

As the nutritionist explains, erythritol can be added to various recipes and culinary preparations to replace traditional sugar.

“It is only important to take into account, however, the preparation time and the melting time for it to adapt to the flavor”, she points out.

“Since it has very little calories, it is often used as an ingredient in sugar-free products, such as chocolates, sweets and chewing gum, diet and light products”, he adds.

Therefore, erythritol is a very flexible natural sweetener to be used on a daily basis, without contraindications and with few calories, making it a good option for those looking for a more balanced diet.

“With regard to the amount and frequency of consumption, each person has a different indication and, therefore, an individual assessment is important”, she points out.
