Emotional maturity: learn to like those who like you!

Share:

Last week, during one of those sweet conversations about life, a colleague asked how I got into writing about relationships. I was intrigued by the question, stopped to think and realized that this was such a natural process that even I couldn’t remember exactly how it happened.

I tried to look for this memory in my mind and I realized that reading and writing have always been habits so essential for my maturation that I most likely started writing about love to organize my own doubts, questions and crises, read my dilemmas and learn to relate better. .

After that, I confess that I took a night to reread my writings from the draft of a note to my high school sweetheart and I realized how good it is to record our own learnings and epiphanies and observe as spectators the evolution of our way of loving and relating.

I realized, rereading myself, that the great milestone that brought a good bit of peace and maturity to my heart as a girl in love was learning to like people who really deserve my affection and give me real reasons to dedicate my thoughts and feelings to they.

What I learned from rereading myself was that emotional maturity happens when you learn to like people who like you too. The people who give you reasons to dedicate yourself. People who leave no doubt. The ones that are easier to love.

I say this because for a long time I looked for reasons to like people who weren’t even so nice to me but enchanted me with their cute smile or the dimple in their cheeks.

For a long time I got carried away by people who clearly didn’t care about me but for some inexplicable reason enchanted me to the point of making me dedicate my precious time to them.

Today, rereading myself, I realize that the great grace of relationships resides in reciprocity. Today I know that when someone likes us, there is no doubt. Today I know who deserves love who is easy to love. Today I know that maturing is also about learning to like those who like you. Who also knows how to love.
