Elderly people in a nursing home create posters to welcome visitors on Grandparents’ Day

There are many elderly people who end up in nursing homes because circumstances forced them to do so or simply because their relatives considered it the best solution for them. But, behind every story, there is a person who sometimes has to deal with loneliness, with the lack of company and with the absence of love to brighten their life.

In Brazil Grandparents’ Day is celebrated on June 20. In Mexico, for example, it is celebrated on August 28. And, to do something different, the grandparents of a nursing home in this North American country created an unusual initiative, inviting people to visit them and giving ideas about the gifts they would like to receive.

O awesome.club knows that a small attitude can completely change a person’s day, so he wants to share with you all the details of this initiative. Grandparents, no matter where they are, are just waiting to receive some of your attention and love.

Visit a grandfather or grandmother

“I am: Mary

I would like to receive as a gift:

— a handbag

— sandals

Visit me!”

“Visit a grandfather” was the name given to an initiative created by the DIF (a type of governmental organization for family protection) in the city of Reynosa, Mexico. A week before Grandparents’ Day, a message was published on the institution’s Facebook page, in which the grandparents of Casa Lar do Idoso made an invitation with the intention of calling people to accompany them on that day to live together, talk and spend a joyful time with them.

For this, the nice gentlemen and ladies took pictures holding signs with their own names, some requests, in case someone wanted to give them something as a gift and, most importantly, an invitation for them to visit them.

Simple gifts that fill the heart

“I’M NAME: ANDREA

I would like to receive as a gift:

– crayons

— a coloring book

VISIT ME”

As someone gets older, they know that the most valuable thing people can gift or share with them is their time. These grandparents don’t ask for much, just a little company, conversation and laughter to have moments of happiness.

Among the gifts they asked for were very simple things, such as crayons, coloring or crossword books, soft drinks, hamburgers, body cream, hats, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, socks and clothes, among other things. But the most important request was to receive a visit and to have someone’s company.

“I AM: RODRIGO

I would like to receive as a gift:

— Book (crossword)

– Cap

I WAIT FOR YOU!”

an embarrassing truth

Many are lucky enough to continue to enjoy the company of their grandparents, but some people never even get to meet them. If you are lucky enough to be with them and enjoy their stories, you know that the love they provide is second to none.

But imagine if one of your grandparents had to be alone, far from their loved ones and without someone to hug them and give them attention and affection. Doesn’t sound good at all, right? The sad reality is that many elderly people are abandoned or have to live in such circumstances because of the family situation in which they find themselves. However, grandparents like those in this institution continue to hope to live happily and with a smile on their faces, despite everything.

Small actions make a big difference

“AM: ISRAEL

I would like to receive as a gift:

– sneakers

– A ball

– cap

I WAIT FOR YOU!”

The initiative had a great response and some citizens responded to their grandparents’ requests. Israel, an elderly man in the house (pictured above), asked for a pair of sneakers, a ball or a cap and a good-hearted man went to visit him to talk, giving him a ball.

The smile he received in return shows that a small gesture of love can make a big difference in someone’s day. The project is still active and anyone can visit the old people. If you live in Mexico and want to participate, you can contact the nursing home using the numbers shown on the Facebook page.

A young woman shared on twitter some photographs showing his experience with the grandparents of the house. Many of them were happy to receive the gifts she prepared with so much love. As a result, she could witness many grateful smiles.

Cheer up! How about creating an initiative like this in Brazil or Portugal? Have you ever collaborated with any similar institution? Leave your answers in the comments.
