Do you have varicose veins or leg swelling? Bet on physical exercise –

Veins work like the body’s plumbing – it’s through them that blood circulates. “When the vessels lose their elasticity, the liquid accumulates and they dilate, forming varicose veins”, explains angiologist Marcelo Monteiro, from Rio de Janeiro. They appear in those with unfavorable genetics and when there are factors that increase the risk (overweight, smoking and hormonal variations, as in pregnancy).

The appearance of the legs is not a guarantee of anything – contrary to popular belief, varicose veins are not always visible. “Seeing veins depends on the color and thickness of the skin, as well as the amount of fat around them.” But an exam done by an angiologist can point out if your vessels have little elasticity. In case of family history, it is worth taking the doubt.

Exercise does not make varicose veins worse; sedentary lifestyle, yes. Aerobic activities, such as walking and running, are the best in this case, because they stimulate circulation. It is also important to develop the calf muscles, which pump blood flow from the legs back to the heart. Now, those who have dilated veins cannot exaggerate with the washers. “During weight training, the pressure in the abdomen increases and the blood goes straight to the legs, causing an overload”, explains Marcelo.

Compression stockings are indispensable for those with venous disease because they control symptoms. But it’s no use running with them thinking you won’t have varicose veins. “With the stockings, the veins do not dilate and the circulation speeds up. The result is just less leg swelling.” The accessory still brings a benefit to all women. “As it increases venous flow, there is more oxygen circulating and, therefore, less release of lactic acid (which causes muscle fatigue)”, says Marcelo. If you feel no discomfort, use them as you wish.
