Dermaplaning: what it is, benefits –

Dermaplaning won social media, with several videos showing great before and after results. But is it really safe? Here we tell you everything you need to know!

WHAT IS DERMAPLANING

It’s an exfoliation treatment that involves gently scraping your face with a medical-grade scalpel to remove the top layer of skin. Shaving removes both dead skin cells and the fine hairs known as peach fuzz, leaving the surface of your face ultra-smooth. By stimulating the development of new skin cells, this type of exfoliation — sometimes called a facial scalpel — helps new skin rise to the surface. It leaves patients with a younger, dewy face, but without harsh chemicals, excessive downtime, or pain.

CAN I DO IT AT HOME?

That’s where the big question comes in. Despite having viralized on social networks, the procedure is not as simple as it seems. “The skin is our first layer of protection and, when it is completely peeled off, we increase the chances of injuries, blemishes and contamination”, explains Ana Clara Brathwaite, postgraduate biomedical doctor in Aesthetic Health. The expert clarifies that the procedure abruptly removes the stratum corneum of the skin (the first layer that is composed of cells that are about to die and will naturally detach from the skin), leaving the skin exposed.

If the person doing it is not a professional with good command of the technique and hand control, the blade can deepen and transform the superficial peeling into a deep peeling, causing a much bigger lesion.

Another factor that the specialist considers critical is that the technique does not have sufficient scientific basis. “When we search for this name in a scientific database, such as PUBMED, which is the largest database of scientific articles in the world, only seven scientific articles appear. This is very little and some of them do not even speak directly about the procedure, so I consider it a precarious technique with a scientific basis, risky and dangerous.

BENEFITS OF CLINICAL DERMAPLANING

Know the reported benefits – of clinical treatment, huh!

Because it eliminates dead skin cells and stimulates the development of new cells, this treatment has a rejuvenating effect on the skin. Skin tone is evened out and hyperpigmentation – the darker patches that can appear on the skin – is reduced.

Fewer fine lines and wrinkles

All those new skin cells also help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, warding off some of the first signs of aging.

While scalpel facials are widely known for their rejuvenating effect on the skin, this treatment also tames the peach fuzz that bothers so many patients. Many patients say that their face feels smooth after the treatment. One of the benefits of this treatment is that it works on darker, more visible facial hair as well as fine vellus hair.

Most effective home skincare

The first few days after treatment are an ideal time to focus on your serums, moisturizers, and other elements of your at-home skincare routine. Your hairless face and super clean pores will be able to fully absorb these treatments, and you will get the maximum benefit from them.

Cleaner and smaller pores

This treatment serves as a deep facial cleanser that removes dirt, oil, and dead skin cells from the pores. After cleaning the pores, they will look smaller on the face. This contributes to a more youthful appearance, as pore size is directly related to age.

This is a quick and easy treatment that involves no downtime. Most appointments last no more than an hour and you can get back to your routine afterwards.

Won’t my facial hair grow even thicker?

An old wives’ tale suggests that hair will grow back thicker and even darker after shaving, but dermaplaning doesn’t have that effect. This treatment does not affect or alter the hair follicles, nor does it influence the rate of facial hair growth. Only genetics can determine how fast your hair will grow, and hormones are responsible for deciding where you grow dark, thick hair and where you grow light, fine, velvet hair.
