6 Weaknesses of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” to check while you wait for the release of the third film in the saga

Last month Warner Bros. announced that the third part of the saga Fantastic Beasts is scheduled for November 2021. Despite the great expectations on the part of the fans, it must be recognized that Fantastic Beasts: The Grindelwald Crimes (2018) turned into a huge disappointment for many of its viewers. J. K. Rowling did not surprise as a screenwriter and the film did not show the same success as her books.

After the news about the release of the third part, the awesome.club decided to take on the role of critic. With the help of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, we rounded up the second film’s biggest mistakes. Check it out right now, but beware of spoilers.

1. Too many characters

Probably the biggest problem with the film is the large amount of characters that are lost in the plot. The movie wouldn’t have changed much without:

Queenie and Kowalski. Although they are a very cute couple in the first film, in the second they don’t have much importance. Nagini. Despite an impactful appearance for some people, the plot does not need it. The character does nothing throughout the entire movie and it’s hard to empathize because everyone knows that she will kill Severus a few decades later. Yusuf🇧🇷 After seeing the film, many people did not understand who this man was, what he did and what his reasons were. Nicolas Flamel🇧🇷 The character causes different opinions. On the one hand, it’s nice to hear a familiar name; on the other, it does nothing throughout the story, it just casts a spell that could have been cast by any other character. Leta’s nanny. It’s hard to understand what this character’s role is in the film. Theseus Scamander. Yet another familiar character with a presence that barely changes anything in the plot.

2. Too many boring love stories

Leta Lestrange and Theseus. There is no energy in the relationship and it is not possible to know which brother she says “I love you” to at the end. Queenie and Jacob. They could be the public’s favorite couple, but they have few scenes in the film. Also, Queenie’s giddy and hysterical behavior makes all romanticism disappear. Newt and Tina. Perhaps the most boring couple of the century. She behaves like a primary school teacher while he prefers to communicate with animals. creedence and Nagini. How did these two meet? Why did they fall in love? Do you plan a future together? All of that is out of the movie. Dumbledore and Grindelwald. A very important romantic part that is mentioned in a very superficial way, which creates strangeness. If the creators wanted to include a homosexual relationship, why not talk about it openly?

3. Many characters behave ridiculously

Queenie. She takes away the self-will of loved ones and reads their thoughts without asking. But the big question that remains is: why did you believe in Grindelwald?

The librarian and the archives. This character lets Gellert and Newt’s accomplice into the secret archives. When Leta goes to get her own documents, she immediately enters with the matagots.

The Lestrange surroundings. Something simply terrible: a white-skinned aristocrat takes, as an object, a black-skinned woman and forcibly marries her.

4. It seems the movie needs neither Newt nor his animals

In the film, there are few fantastic animals. In the first film they are justified, but in the second part they are practically unnecessary.

Newt is an excellent main character, but he doesn’t move the plot and does more harm than good. In a nutshell, he doesn’t help Dumbledore, tries to save Tina, walks into a trap, and does nothing when Queenie and Creedence turn to the dark side. It seems that both he and his animals are needed just to justify the film’s name.

5. There are many inconsistencies in the script

What some observant fans noticed:

McGonagallaccording to followers, was born in 1935, therefore he could not teach in the 1920s. Kowalski remembers everything after receiving a spell that erased his memory. In the original version, Nagini was just a snake, not a maledictus. Dumbledore’s parents died before Credence was born. The script abuses the polyjuice potion🇧🇷 In the film, it is used three times: during the villain’s escape, Newt’s visit to the Ministry, and the seizure of the Lestrange documents. But why didn’t law enforcement officials control its use? Why wasn’t there any kind of warning from the Ministry? Grindelwald’s escape is spectacular, but it’s unconvincing. Why take him in an unsafe car? Why does Abernathy have access to Gellert?

Despite all this, some moments can be forgiven and are even funny. For example: look how the passage of measly 10 years was not positive for Dumbledore.

6. The most inexplicable part of the movie is the ending

This is the most spectacular visual scene and also one of the weakest in terms of plot logic. It raises many questions.

Why do the protagonists do nothing? There is a villain in the scene and he must be captured by any means. However, instead, they let the crowd listen to their speech and fall in love with Grindelwald’s ideas. Only then do they decide to act. Why did they kill Grindelwald’s redheaded follower? She hasn’t done anything wrong, she’s just there listening. Also, there are many spells in the Harry Potter universe that can be undone. She was killed immediately. Why does Leta attack Grindelwald? What was this? A suicide out of guilt? What is Grindelwald’s crime? Throughout the movie, the main villain killed a family (and he didn’t do it himself), a half-elf and a guard on the run. At the end of the film, other characters die, but still the name of the film does not justify itself.

Despite all this, the film has three strong points.

The beauty. The plot takes place in France, which allows viewers to see what the European wizarding world was like. We sincerely hope that the next films will continue in this pleasant tradition. Special effects. Thanks to them, we can see many spectacular scenes that will be forever marked, for example the moment when Grindelwald calls his followers. The actors. It’s hard to imagine another actor who doesn’t Jude Law in the role of young Dumbledore. the role of Johnny Depp as a villain is controversial, but it’s always interesting to see the Jack Sparrow actor in another role.
