Daisy flower meaning includes new beginnings, hope, innocence, fun, affection and other sweet attributes. Daisies are part of the Asteraceae Flower family that includes over 32,000 species. They are also known as “aster flowers” or “asters”. Since they are part of the same family, this post includes both daisy and aster flower symbolism and meanings, and I will use the two terms interchangeably.

Because asters are found on every continent except Antarctica, they are the subject of the mythologies and folklore of many cultures around the world. This post will feature some of those stories, as well as aster and daisy colors and spiritual meanings.

Around the world, daisies and asters are symbols of new beginnings. Blooming in spring, these enchanting flowers remind us of new beginnings, sunshine and renewal. For this reason, asters are often given away or planted to welcome new babies into the world.

The name “daisy” actually comes from an Old English term meaning “eye of the day”. The reason for this is that like lotus flowers, daisies open in the morning to absorb the sun of the day and close again in the evening. So, daisies and asters remind us that every day is an opportunity to start anew.

Hope

Because they symbolize new beginnings, daisy and aster flowers are also symbols of hope. They remind us that hope is one of the most powerful tools we have to manifest better outcomes and a better world. Even disappointments can bring new opportunities. As the saying goes, “When one door closes and another opens.”

innocence

Since they are symbols of new beginnings and hope, the meaning of daisies and aster flowers is also associated with innocence. As a result, these special flowers represent babies and children.

It is important to remember that innocence can also apply to adults. In this way, the meaning of daisies resembles what Buddhists describe as “having a beginner’s mind.” It means embodying a way of life and approaching life and situations with a child’s curiosity and enthusiasm. Not to mention that these flowers are pretty easy to draw. They were probably the first flowers many of us drew as children. How many of us have plucked the petals of an aster flower while playing the game “he loves me, he loves me not” or “she loves me, she loves me not”, depending on which is the case? Since daisies and other asters are easy to grow in many places, they are often the wildflowers picked for a bouquet to give to someone you have a crush on. Therefore, the meaning of daisy and aster flowers also includes affection and love.

In Victorian England, where floral symbolism was a popular pastime, giving aster flowers as gifts meant reciprocating affection.

Aster Flower Meaning in Greek Mythology

For the ancient Greeks, aster flowers were sacred. The Greeks used it to make wreaths, which they placed in their temples. They also burned aster leaves to purify the air and drive away evil spirits.

The ancient Greeks also associated the goddess Astraea with aster flowers. According to a Greek legend, during the Iron Age people began to manufacture many weapons and warfare increased. Enraged by the violence, Jupiter decided to destroy the human world with a great flood. But before he did, the gods who had lived on earth left. The goddess Astraea was the last to leave. Heartbroken at the loss of life, she asked Jupiter to turn her into a star.

Eventually the flood receded. But all that was left of the world was mud and slime. Seeing the destruction, Astraea wept, and her tears fell like stardust. When they hit land, they turned into aster flowers.
