Clay: how to use it on the skin and where to buy each color –

Green, purple, red, black… There are many types of clays existing on the market. If used on the skin, they promise the most different functions: controlling oiliness, improving acne, calming and promoting detox effect. There is even an alternative therapy made with the natural product: geotherapy, which works to purify the body. But after all, which one to buy and how to use it?

What are clays?

Nothing more than the result of the aging of rock crystals, clays are composed of extremely small particles of minimized silicate (or aluminum silicate), in addition to several trace elements, such as silicon, titanium, magnesium, copper and zinc. “The different extraction sources produce minimized silicates of different types and concentrations”, explains pharmacist and biochemist Fernanda Chauvin, (@dra. fernandachauvin) CEO of Ellementti Dermocosméticos.

According to the quantity of minerals present in the clay, one of its effects will be enhanced, says the expert. However, the different constitutions do not modify its main action, which is the absorbing action, healing and antiseptic.

How to use the clays?

Diluted in water for masks. Or in creams. “They are also present in shampoos and soaps, and can be used once or twice a week”, advises Fernanda.

A lot of people say that when applying it to your face, you should wait about 20 minutes, but you can’t let the mixture dry. Therefore, it is indicated that you spray water from time to time. “In fact, if the clay dries, it becomes difficult to remove, which can cause skin irritation due to the removal process” adds the pharmacist.

“What I advise is to make a first mask with water, so that it absorbs as many toxins as possible. It can be removed in the shower. Afterwards, there is the possibility of making a second application, this time with a few drops of essencial oils — the pores will be wide open and it will replace the nutrients, minerals and actives coming from the oils”, says Joel Aleixo (@joelaleixo), alchemist of AlchemyLab. Avoid tap water to prepare your clay due to chlorine – prefer mineral water.

Some naturalists even claim that it should be left in the sun for about 30 minutes before use. Thus, its piezoelectric activity (ability to generate electrical voltage in response to mechanical pressure) will store energy and increase its properties.
