Best Colleges of Psychology – Complete List with Enade 2012 and 2013

Hello friends!

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the Best Psychology Courses. Questions like:

“What is the best psychology college here in São Paulo?”

“Is college X worth it?”

“Between college X and college Y, which is the best?”

“Are federal colleges really better than private ones?

Well, to answer all these questions we have to question, mainly, two aspects: 1) What does better mean; 2) How can we evaluate a college?

Through psychology itself, we can analyze the idea about the best. To say that something is better is to make a comparison between at least two elements. That is, we are making use of our feeling function (according to Carl Gustav Jung). To learn more, see our Psychological Types Course

The feeling function is a psychic function that helps us to choose, to make decisions, to evaluate through criteria what is better and what is worse, what is more beautiful and what is uglier, what is more adequate and what which less suitable and so on.

Well, what does it mean to be the best college?

According to the MEC (Ministry of Education), to evaluate an academic institution, one takes into account the infrastructure (buildings, laboratories, libraries), didactic resources (for example, datashow), qualification of the professors (specialization, master’s, doctorate) and, also, the assessment of students with national tests such as the former Provão and the current Enade.

That is to say, there are objective criteria that can be evaluated in order to know the quality of an educational institution. However, it is also necessary to be aware of the fact that universities can find ways to circumvent this evaluation system.

For example, some private universities put specific subjects for students to study for the Enade, that is, instead of putting more elective subjects or deepening in the basic subjects, the student has to study for a test that will be useful only for the institution itself. do well on the assessment, with no benefit to the student.

In the specific case of psychology, we also have to understand that psychology is a plural field of study. As I always say here, they are psychologies and not psychology. Both in the sense that we have to study different theories (psychoanalysis, behaviorism, gestalt, analytical psychology, humanism, existentialism, phenomenology, etc) but we also have to study practice (clinical psychology, organizational psychology, hospital psychology, social psychology, community, etc).

With that in mind, how to evaluate a psychology faculty as the best?

Perhaps, if you are more interested in behavioral psychology and study at a college where most professors prefer psychoanalysis, you will end up specializing in psychoanalysis, but not in behavioral. Because even in a specific behavioral discipline, you can find a teacher who is only there to work hours and who will want to criticize the line more than teach it.

In this way, we ended up having a big problem to evaluate which would be the best psychology faculty. Especially because, before entering college, students in general do not know that there are so many lines and approaches, so many possibilities for action and, even if they do, they will not be able to know in advance what their line of work will be in 4, 5 years. .

However, it is possible to overcome this difficulty, this problem, by finding an institution that has professors in all lines, or, at least, in the most important ones.

When I studied at the Federal University of São João del-rei (between 2002 and 2006) I had precisely this breadth of perspective, with excellent professors from psychoanalysts, behaviorists, phenomenologists, social psychologists.

In this sense, an excellent psychology faculty will be one that offers professors qualified to teach – with depth and ethics – the disciplines that are mandatory for the course, in the national definition of what the curriculum should contain.

This is also a big question for anyone searching for the best psychology faculty. In general, all colleges will have the same curriculum because this is a requirement of the federal government, of the Ministry of Education.

However, as I said above, having an identical grade here and there will not mean that the student will have the best teacher to teach all subjects. It is not uncommon for a psychoanalyst to give humanism classes and nothing prevents him from giving, as long as he is ethical enough to teach without wanting to pull to his point of view, of psychoanalysis.

Anyway, what I want to show is that the best psychology faculty will not necessarily be the one that will appear in government statistics (see below). And not just because of what I’ve said so far.

We have to consider that subjective, personal, internal situations also come into play for the evaluation of what is the best faculty.

For example, will the best college be the most expensive one? The one that will require a lot of effort from the student and their family to pay? Evidently not. We can find excellent institutions that are cheaper but just as good.

And here, too, we enter another question – “Are federal colleges really better than private ones?

Well, I already answered this question in this text – Private or Public College – which one should I choose

Conclusion

Before listing the best psychology schools, as judged by the federal government, I would like to comment a little further on the issue of federal versus private colleges.

In principle, federal colleges are better (for the reasons I cite in the other text), but also because they are free. In this case, free does not mean lack of quality – on the contrary. And it must also be remembered that we all pay, indirectly, through taxes.

I say it’s better because the money invested in a particular college could be used in other courses, books, congresses, etc. – complementing the education.

But as, unfortunately, the federal or state college is not always available (either because of the difficulty of entering the entrance exam or Enem, or because there is not one in a region), we have to take into account some criteria to evaluate private colleges.

The main ones, in my opinion, are:

– Assessment of students and alumni (we can get in touch with them by going to the faculty during break times or by finding groups and forums on the internet);

– Teacher evaluation (it is possible to evaluate teachers based on their Lattes curriculum);

– Evaluation of the library and research laboratories (it is possible to go to the institution and see the infrastructure);

Also, we have to consider the values. As I said, just because an institution charges twice the price does not mean it will be much better. As it is a long-term investment, it is necessary to consider the financial reality of each one. Because it is much better to fulfill the dream of graduating than to stand still in time.

The first grade means the IGC and the second grade the CPC, that is, the grade for the Course only. In this case, all those listed had the highest score for the Psychology Course

What is IGC? The IGC (General Course Index) is an indicator that evaluates the quality of teaching at a university, university center or college. It ranges from 1 to 5. For the calculation, the quality of all courses at the institution is taken into account. What is CPC? The CPC (Preliminary Course Concept) is the “grade” of the course and takes into account the performance of students in Enade, the qualifications of professors, didactic-pedagogical resources and infrastructure. Like the IGC, it ranges from 1 to 5
