Imagine being in a restaurant anxiously awaiting your order, but when they bring it out, it’s not what you ordered, but a completely different dish. This place existed, but the customers, instead of getting annoyed, simply laughed and enjoyed the food. The Restaurant of the Wrong Orders (The Restaurant Of Order Mistake), in Japan, was a great idea that aimed to make the public aware of what it means to live with Alzheimer’s. After all, all waiters suffered from this affliction.
O awesome.club believes it’s a great idea to make people aware of a disease (regardless of what it is) with a touch of humor. Therefore, he wants to tell you everything he researched about this super unusual initiative.
Design with a lot of humor
Choosing between so many options on a menu is quite complicated, especially for indecisive people. But that was what mattered least in the restaurant with wrong orders, because it was already known before entering that the dish served would not be the one that had been ordered. Another certainty that everyone had was that customers and waiters would not lose their smile.
The restaurant opened in 2017 in the Japanese capital. The brilliant idea for the project came to a group of businessmen who wanted to promote tolerance in society in relation to this sad and complex pathology, Alzheimer’s.
The restaurant
The project ran for three days and regulars were invited. From the beginning, customers accepted the main rule: if the order didn’t come out right, they should just smile. Even the menu was specially prepared to let customers know that they would eat well and have a great time, even if the food came out different from what they had ordered, as the waiters forgot a third of requests.
It is normal for people to have difficulty deciding between one dish or another. It happens that, many times, even in the most sophisticated restaurants, the waiters sometimes get confused. But, with disarmed spirits — since they knew the situation of the employees beforehand — this did not happen in the unusual establishment. After all the food was never what was expected.
The main ingredient: empathy
17 patients with Alzheimer’s disease worked at the restaurant. In addition to promoting tolerance, respect and empathy with those who suffer from this type of dementia, the creators also sought to show that being diagnosed with the problem does not mean becoming a useless person. On the contrary, with a little understanding and patience on the part of the environment, these patients can continue to work.
A successful experience
The project was widely accepted by the public, and many enjoyed eating at the restaurant. There was no anger or “mimimi”; there was a breath of tolerance and joy in the place.
One of the guests invited to live the experience was a renowned Japanese food blogger named Mizuho Kudo. Thanks to what she wrote on her social networks, the restaurant became very popular. She commented that she ordered a hamburger but received delicious meatballs. And she didn’t mind, because the cheerful waitress served her with kindness and care.
The restaurant’s success led the project’s creators to think about repeating the experience. On September 21, 2018, World Alzheimer’s Day, the establishment reopened its doors for many people to enjoy a delicious meal, while also closely observing what it means to suffer from such a misunderstood disease.
