A group of women make mats from plastic bags to donate to the homeless.

All over the world, there are many people who need to get by on the street and survive. While many people go out of their way to help others, it takes a lot of work to bring about real change. However, undoubtedly a small action can make an extremely important difference. Some women, who in addition suffer from arthritis, thought of helping the most needy people and, for that, they organized and started making mats from plastic bags for donation.

Behind the project is a group of ladies who have joined forces and ingenuity, for more than 4 years, to contribute with a grain of sand and promote a change in society. They are better known as “Bag Ladies” and every week they get together to work, cut and make mats with the plastic bags. Even with your condition they are happy to help. “It might not be much, but it is extremely rewarding to know that you are helping someone, even just a little bit,” one of them said in an interview.

Thinking about improving the conditions of those who need to sleep on the streets, these volunteers started using plastic bags in a different way, making mats that work like a mattress. In this way, people don’t have to sleep directly on the concrete, and the mat can be used to keep warm on cold days. Others may use it to protect the mattress they sleep on from dirt and rainwater.

Once the idea of ​​these ladies became known, people from all over the world became interested in the mission. For this reason, they shared a video showing the step-by-step process to create a treadmill like the ones they make and it really seems to be a very relaxing activity. In addition to the bags, scissors and a large crochet hook are needed. After arranging and cutting them, they form a ball with the strips and start creating their masterpieces.

This group of heroines turned thousands of bags into useful mats for the homeless. It takes 600 to 700 bags to make just one mat, and while it sounds simple, it takes time, work, and effort. However, the most important thing is that each one of them does it with all their love. Although it can sometimes be a little complicated because of the illness they suffer from, the satisfaction of helping others is much greater than any circumstance and, without a doubt, an example of solidarity, empathy and inspiration.

Fortunately, a lot of people joined the project. The Mississippi River Ministry (MRM), which is an organization that serves more than 3,000 churches in helping the poor, also makes the mats. In addition, the people who are part of the project are responsible for carrying out some programs to combat poverty. Thanks to their work, donations of clothes, food, diapers, furniture, toys, school material and mattresses are made.
