Less invasive, faster and more efficient: this is how new dental treatments are

That story that beautiful and well-groomed teeth are anyone’s best business card is true. After all, they indicate care for health and appearance, in addition to reflecting on everyone’s social and professional life. Not to mention that they leverage self-love and self-confidence and, depending on the case, are worth plastic surgery, as they are able to modify the expression of the face (without the need to enter the scalpel, phew!).

So no more hiding your smile for fear of showing yellowed, separated or misaligned teeth. We spoke with the best specialists in cosmetic dentistry and recommended quick, safe and efficient treatments to correct these and other flaws that bring women to the dentist’s office. It’s time to redesign your smile once and for all!

Whiter whiter: whitening gel

Indication: return the natural color to teeth yellowed by food, cigarettes or medication. “The technique lasts longer than the laser”, guarantees dentist Marcelo Kyrillos, from Ateliê Oral, in São Paulo.

How it works: the professional takes a mold of the patient’s dental arch and sends it to the prosthetist, who makes the silicone tray. At home, you put the indicated amount of carbamide peroxide gel in it and use it for half an hour every day. “Keeping the tray in place for a few minutes over a long period of time (which can vary from three weeks to 45 days, depending on the case) is more efficient than wearing it for hours over a few days”, explains Kyrillos.

Post-treatment: You don’t need to deprive yourself of coffee or chocolate after treatment. “If the teeth return to pigment after some time, the whitening can be repeated using the same tray.”

Two-in-one change: dentogingival prosthesis

Indication: replace missing teeth, especially when the patient has great bone loss and cannot perform the traditional implant, or cover small teeth without extracting them. “Here, the gingiva and the tooth are reproduced in porcelain and gain a completely natural appearance in terms of color and texture”, clarifies Marcelo Kyrillos. The prosthesis can either be implanted in the bone (when possible) or cemented over the original tooth.

How it works: based on a CT scan of the face, the dentist reproduces the patient’s mouth in plaster. On top of the mold, he remakes in wax the defects to be corrected or the teeth that must be replaced and makes a prosthesis in acrylic resin, which the patient will use for 15 days to adapt her facial muscles and breathing. It is then replaced by the permanent.

Post-treatment: cleaning is the same as for natural teeth and there are no dietary restrictions.

Perfect alignment: porcelain veneers

Indication: cover the outer face of stained, misaligned or separated teeth and ensure a uniform smile.

What it’s like: “At the first consultation, the dentist defines what needs to be changed, wears down the tooth with the drill and takes the silicone mold from those to be covered. Then, it is sent to the prosthesis laboratory to make the porcelain sheets, which will be 0.3 millimeters to 1 millimeter thick”, describes the dentist specialized in aesthetic dentistry Lauro Delgado Júnior, from São Paulo. Until the next session, the patient uses a provisional resin restoration and, on the day of application, the professional glues the blades with specific cement. Despite the aesthetic benefit, the downside is the need to grind down healthy teeth.

Post-treatment: care is to carry out normal hygiene and visit the dentist periodically to assess the need for cleaning and polishing the veneers.

Tiny details: porcelain fragments

Indication: are the evolution of facets. “Instead of covering the entire face of the tooth, the pieces of veneer are applied in a corner, at the base or in the middle, for example, in order to fill gaps and fractured or worn teeth”, describes Marcelo Kyrillos. “They are not indicated to match the color or align crooked teeth.”

How it works: in a first appointment, the dentist will make a plaster model in the right shape so that the prosthetist can make the porcelain fragments in the exact color. One advantage of fragments over veneers is that there is no wear on the tooth surface, and they are bonded with their own cement directly onto the enamel.

Post-treatment: care is the same as for placing porcelain veneers.

Clearer gums: gingival peeling

Indication: when the gum is dark, which happens because of the higher concentration of melanin in the tissue.

How it works: “After applying local anesthesia, the gingival surface is mechanically abraded, using a drill or blades”, describes dentist Cristiano Pascoal, from Vitória. The procedure takes about an hour, causes bearable pain, according to the professional, and a little bleeding.

Post-treatment: during the first week acidic, salty and spicy foods are prohibited, as the mouth is more sensitive, but you will only need to take painkillers on the first day. In the ten days following the procedure, you should use an irrigation solution (based on chlorhexidine digluconate) to help clean the area, as you will not be able to use a brush, paste and dental floss during this period. Healing takes place between seven and ten days. “Over time, the fabric may darken again, as it is constantly renewed, but it does not usually recover its original color. In that case, the procedure can be repeated”, says Cristiano.

Teeth in evidence: gum plastic surgery

Indication: to correct the so-called gummy smile, reducing the exaggerated exposure of tissue and enlarging the teeth.

How it works: Cristiano Pascoal explains that, after cleaning the mouth and under local anesthesia, the excess gingival tissue is surgically removed with scalpel microblades and the gingiva is stabilized in the correct position (with or without suture, depending on the case). The procedure takes between one and two hours, depending on the extent involved, causes bearable pain and a little bleeding.

Post-treatment: in the first two days, you should take analgesics and, for ten days, use an irrigation solution to help with hygiene. You also need to avoid biting with your teeth close in the first ten days, when the stitches are removed, if there is a suture. The result is noticed immediately and healing begins in 15 days, but the complete process takes about six months.

Brand new mouth: blunt implant

Indication: replace lost teeth without making extensive cuts in the gums or stitches. Those who have had significant bone loss must first undergo a bone graft that allows the prosthesis to be fixed.

How it is: the technique was the big news at the 7th International Symposium on Prosthesis and Implants, held in May in São Paulo. It all starts with a CT scan, which will analyze the condition of bones and muscles, as well as the size and position of the teeth, in the patient’s arch. “The exam goes through a computer program in which three-dimensional images are generated that will help the dentist in planning how the implants will be placed”, says dental surgeon Rodolfo Candia Alba Júnior, from São Paulo, director of the Brazilian Association of Industry Medical-Dental (Abimo). Based on these images, a resin surgical guide (a kind of prototype) is made with holes for exact positioning and each implanted tooth. The dentist places this guide in the patient’s mouth and drills the gum and bone with a motor and a special surgical kit in the indicated places to fix the titanium and ceramic prostheses. The surgical intervention is quick: each implant takes less than ten minutes.

Post-treatment: the calcification of the bone on the titanium takes between three and six months, but the patient leaves the office being able to eat everything and carry out normal hygiene.
