Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an unconventional food plant (PANC) that has several uses, due to its nutritional and medicinal properties. To learn more about the species and its benefits, we interviewed Pollyana Guimarães (CRN 11529), nutritionist at Grupo Pardini. Pollyana explains that purslane is often confused with weed, being a creeping plant that adapts well to all types of soil and does not need much light and water to survive.

The purslane is from the same family as the eleven o’clock (Portulaca grandiflora), but, in addition to being inedible, they are also distinguished by the shape of their leaves. Purslane leaves are flat and oval or rounded, while eleven o’clock leaves are thinner and longer, resembling little fingers.

The nutritionist says that purslane has several nutritional properties: “it has omega 3 in its composition, is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, fiber and phenolic compounds, in addition to being antioxidant and anti-inflammatory”.   1. Controlling Diabetes: Pollyana explains that, due to its fiber content, purslane controls blood sugar levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
  2. Prevention of oxidative stress: the plant also protects cells from oxidative stress that is caused by free radicals, as it is rich in antioxidant substances. Thus, it helps to prevent aging and cancer.
  3. Improvement of the inflammatory profile (arthritis): the specialist also highlights that, “because it contains anti-inflammatory properties, purslane can reduce joint pain.”
  4. Antibacterial action: “Some studies have shown antibacterial action against different types of bacteria”, quotes Pollyana.
  5. Prevention of cardiovascular diseases: this is due to the fact that purslane is a plant source of omega 3, which is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
  6. Prevention of ulcers and wounds: as it is rich in flavonoids, “purslane has a protective action on the stomach wall and has a healing action”, explains the nutritionist.
  7. Blood pressure control: since it is rich in potassium, the plant has blood pressure regulating action, in addition to being an excellent diuretic.
