6 phrases to reflect on excellence

Few concepts are as complicated to understand and integrate as excellence.. Excellence is a wonderful word, which “sells” a lot. But what does it really entail? What meaning does it have in our life? Is aspiring to excellence the same as aspiring to perfectionism? Does it mean being the best or doing things as best as possible every day?

Actually, It is not just a question of operation or know-how. It goes much further. It is a question with a moral side that implies achieving the best performance in the given circumstances, seeking continuous improvement. For many it is a matter of quantifiable achievements, of skill acquisition. But it is still much more: it reaches a spiritual level, of satisfaction and personal development.

“Excellence is an art gained through training and habit. We do not act correctly because we have excellent virtues, but we are virtuous because we act correctly. We are what we do repetitively. Excellence, then, is not an event but a habit.”

-Aristotle-

Excellence is not an act, but a habit

Excellence is not an established or agreed upon level of quality or perfectionism. It is a dynamic in constant change, which is built with what we do every day.. It’s not so much about being perfect at something – such a respectable aspiration – as about doing things as best as possible every time.

Striving for excellence in what we do requires effort and passion. The drive and commitment to do things well and make an effort that helps us achieve great results.

Excellence is an everyday job

The search for excellence does not rest, does not allow pauses, does not allow exceptions. Excellence requires daily work, because it is based on your own values; those who test you every day, those that you see in everything you do and in everything that happens. If something is important to you, it is best to work on it every day, without exceptions.

On many occasions, the motivation to obtain optimal performance is nourished by a thought: there is the possibility of making a difference. That is to say, there is a significant distance between what we would be able to do with minimal effort and what we would be able to do with greater dedication.

“There is no joy that lasts, in the case of a job like that, a job, any job. Because you always have to go somewhere else. You have to get dressed again to go on a trip. (…) You have to go and knock on the door for excellence, it is an everyday job.”

-Arnaldo Calveyra-

The pleasure of doing things well

Committing to excellence at work is one of the best ways to enjoy it. A work attitude aligned with this aspiration not only allows for good results, but is also enriching for those who maintain it, personally and professionally.

When you know you are doing something well, the feeling of delight that can accompany the activity is multiplied.. And the more you do it, the better the results and the greater the reinforcement you get.

“The secret of joy at work is contained in one word: excellence. Knowing how to do something like that is enjoying it.”

-Pearl Buck-

Excellence is a continuous search

We are talking about a process that rarely ends as long as there is a possibility of intervention. Furthermore, to the extent that we continue to seek excellence, our spirit somehow remains young, excited, and active. Bottom line in thought: you can always improve, in all areas of life, both personal and professional.

Thus, the high height of this personal bar is the result of a concern to improve performance, to optimize results with the resources we have. It is an outward expression of inner integrity, passion and a strong sense of making a real difference.

In every job we do we are presented with the option to take this attitude. Our skills and abilities or the resources or information we have may constitute limitations, but it is also common for us to have a good margin of action. Here, above all, passion and commitment come into play.

“As for me, I am in search of excellence. “I don’t have time to grow old.”

-Will Eisner-

Recognition comes hand in hand with excellence

Many people fight to be recognized, but not all do it the right way. Actually, Achieving recognition through excellence is the noblest way to find it. However, for those who receive recognition in this way, obtaining it is usually not as important as the optimal result.

On the other hand, if you are not looking for excellence, it is difficult to find it. And seeking excellence means acting with excellence, always giving your best. Even though it may seem like excellence is far away, it is actually interest and effort that is most valuable. Because just the fact of wanting it and acting accordingly takes us one step closer to achieving it.

“If you go around the world looking for excellence, you will find excellence; If you go around the world looking for problems, you will find problems. Or, as the Arabic proverb says: What a piece of bread means will depend on whether you are hungry or not.“.

-John Grinder-

Take advantage of every small opportunity for excellence

“It is difficult to get there by walking at a very leisurely pace. Achievers seize opportunities and shape them. They live as if obsessed by the wonderful occasions of each day, convinced that the only thing that no one has to spare is time.”

-Tony Robbins-

Choosing this attitude implies making an investment of faith, giving opportunity to the skill of seeing/identifying an opportunity to improve, it implies moving forward and looking for a way to improve every detail. It’s actionnot observation or reflection, although it may be based on them.

On the other hand, choosing and maintaining this attitude is not easy. Sometimes it can be very frustrating and painful, in the sense that the initial results are often very far from those expected. Thus, finally, excellence becomes an exercise in intelligence and patience, which rewards those who have sufficient resilience to take a step beyond difficulties.
